Cookery 101: "Amplaya Con Carne"

Let's dig our lunch for today. I woke up late and was able to cook my own version of "Ampalaya Con Carne." The word "ampalaya" means bitter gourd and "carne" means meat. To make it clearer, I cooked bitter gourd with thin sliced beef for lunch. The challenging part is to let the beef sirloin soft before mixing with the cord sliced bitter gourd and other spices or condiments. It was an easy meal to prepare. What are you cooking for lunch or dinner today?

Sounds good. How do you remove the bitter part of bitter melon! I saw a youtube demo, rub with salt after reseeding & cleaning bitter melon, let stand for 5 minutes, rinse and cook. I had a stroganoff and added leftover rice to the gravy, perfect. Canned mushrooms and bell peppers because I like it. Was very good. No picture, ate it all.

I was wondering whether bitter gourd was the same thing as bitter melon but I'm guessing you know that the two are the same thing?

@oahuwriter For me, I usually sliced them and soak them in a bowl with a salt solution for about 30 minutes. Then, wash and drain them. After which, I can cook them.

@marguicha same with my husband and myself. We both prefer the dark meat to the white.

I love roasting things up, but I am trying to experiment with meals with veggies lately. Thank you.

Carne is the same in Italian for meat, no matter which kind of meat. For lunch I am considering to make polenta, as this morning is almost cold.

Sad to say that I am not good at cooking eggs like this meal. I need to learn it. I am not kidding. What a pity of me.

@yoalldudes I agree, but the basic food cooking is not what I can do.

@Shavkat The omelette is a simple meal. Your dish though is a level up.

Is bitter gourd the same as bitter melon. Those are green and long and bought mainly by Asian customers. I realized I've not seen them sold here this year.

Indeed, it is also the same with the term 'bitter melon.' They are so abundant during the summer season. I went to the market and bought two pieces.

@MarshaMusselman I do think that bitter melons are not for everyone, but it is a good source of iron though.

@Shavkat we don't eat them here. I've tried some things we sell that are bought by people from other countries like chayote squash but I think I'll refrain from buying the bitter melons.
