While kayaking on the Yadkin River, my friend Phil and I paddled between some old bridge supports. Upon one, about 10 yards(9 meters) from shore, we saw the mailbox in the picture. I believe the stone bridge pillars once held up the Piedmont Toll Bridge erected around 1899 and that bridge replaced an older covered bridge but used the same pillars. The Piedmont Toll Bridge was dismantled and moved downriver in 1922. This was just one of the many interesting things I learned about the area's history while I was there. More to come in future posts.

How cool is that! It's amazing sometimes what you come across when you're exploring.

Finding a mailbox on an old bridge pillar in the river was certainly an unexpected find.

@JudyEv The only reference I can find to the mailbox is from a local article about the old bridges. It says the mailbox was put up by a prankster.

@DWDavis It would have intrigued me. I would have been on a mission then to find out what it was all about.

How neat I love old things like that and the history behind them. Glad you had fun or at least sounds fun to me. Things you cannot do in Californian because either just straight desert or there is a grip of people. I so miss being able to get away from everyone like that.

About half a mile up the river, once past the old bridge pillars, there was nothing man-made to see along the banks. It was as if we were kayaking through a far-off forest. The peace and quiet were enjoyable.

There might be room for a one-person backpacking tent on the top of the stone pillar. There'd be plenty to eat if you like fish.
