Remembering What My Mom Taught Me

I was just reading The Sojourner's post entitled "Day 26--Recessions, Food budgeting, and Having enough". I found her thoughts reminded me of how much my mother taught me as far as budgeting and organized thinking. My mother was a child during the depression. She grew up hoarding a lot of things, saving and economizing. She was very good at budgeting and I think I learned quite a bit from her. She was married to my stepdad for about six or seven years and was able to budget very well and feed four people for $60 a month. We ate well too! She would look at the newspaper ads on Wednesday and go to two or three different stores. Wherever there were good specials. She spent $15 a week This was during the '60s and things were much cheaper then but, still she did a great job and fed us well. She also paid off a $3000 mortgage on the house she bought when she came back to Boise. After she retired she got SS of $444 a month. Her house was paid off and she just had herself to take care of. She saved enough to pay the taxes on the house each year too. I think that this is great because I know how hard it is to save money each month. She was great at mathematics and had a knack for economizing. Thank you, The Sojourner, for the inspiration to write this post.

My parents were never hoarders; but they always economized so that we often took a trip during the summer. They were very frugal; and I am as well. My husband, however, is a food hoarder. The pantry, fridge and freezer are overflowing.

Perhaps because of childhood circumstances.

I think that's great when our parents can instill good values in us.
