The Dog Has the Big D

Poor Jenny is sick. Our dog Jenny woke me up out of a very peaceful sleep this morning running around the house and whining. I knew what that meant so I jumped outta bed, called her and we ran downstairs so I could let her out into the backyard. After running around in circles for about 30 seconds, she went...and went...and went. Three times poor girl. I am proud of her for not messing in the house. I had to go to the grocery store and buy some ground turkey and I boiled that up with some rice. It will be a bland diet for her for the next few days, This dog is the first dog I have ever had that has such a sensitive stomach. She has bouts of diarrhea about 3 times per year. The only thing I can think of that would have set her off is we got a pre-roasted chicken at the IGA on Sunday and we thought maybe it wasn't cooked enough. So before we ate it, my husband and I nuked our servings in the microwave a bit before eating them. But we each gave her a little bit yesterday right from the fridge without cooking it a bit more first. It may have bothered her stomach. I guess I am going to be on nurse duty this week. I had a couple of pills left from the last time she had it so I put one on her food. If it doesn't stop soon I will take her to the vet. What do you do for your dogs when they have diarrhea?

@kareng Yes, I am sure you can imagine. Besides the obvious clean up though I have to cook rice and boil chicken or ground beef/turkey, wait for it to cool, store it in the fridge, and crush up her pills to add to her food but make sure the meds are 12 hours apart. Not much fun!

Hope Jenny gets over it soon. Gaia went through a day or two of not eating and then she went back to eating everything

@Kouponkaren Sounds like you managed to nip any problems in the bud

@Ronrybs I have her on a bland diet now which consists of rice and boiled ground turkey, and I added a bit of canned pumpkin to it. She hasn't had any bathroom issues since yesterday morning so I think that is doing the trip. I am glad Gaia is doing okay.

Luna has never had it. She mostly eats dog food but she prefers what we eat . I only give her snacks with it And then, I heat it a bit if I have it in the fridge.

@marguicha Jenny should just stick to dog food and she would if she just lived with me.

All my dogs have sensitive stomachs. I had them at different times. I fed them lightly for the next few days.usually steamed rice, boiled chicken.

@Kouponkaren Goodluck, it should help. It turns out mine needed probiotics.

@CookieMonster46 Ues, that is what I am doing now. It's ground turkey currently. It's been 3 days and I think I will start introducing her to regular dog food again tomorrow.

@CookieMonster46 I have tried that before, but they are expensive. She was back to normal today. Yay!

Jill gets it if we change her food. The other 2 dont have any problems. So we just dont change food anymore.

@wolfgirl569 I think the chicken might have been a tad undercooked and she seems to have a very sensitive stomach.

Might need to change the dog food, or if she gets table scraps, sometimes those don't sit so well.

@mom210 I try to warn my husband about the table scraps but she has him wrapped around her paw, and he doesn't listen to me!

It's great of you take care of your dog. I don't have pets. I thought I would adopt cats but my wife would rather we wouldn't.

@yanzalong Aw I am sorry. Maybe she would let you pet sit someone else's cat when they go away on vacation?

A bland diet works good for about 24 to 48 hours

@Laurakemunto I read online it's good to do it for 3 to 4 days. I may start adding dry food back and mix it with the bland stuff after 48 hours. It's a real pain to prepare this stuff for 4 days. That's what I did the last time.
