My Favorite Summertime Songs- #6

If you're a High School or College aged youngster summer wouldn't be the same without a car. Teens and young adults need a set of wheels to get to those burger joints, ice cream shops, and to cruise the local city strip for chicks. So, "car tunes" it is... (sorry for the pun). Let's "rev up our engines" climb into that GTO and see which popular summer songs are on my playlist today... 1. Ronnie & the Daytonas- "GTO" -Fast cars were the thing to impress the girls and guys too back in 1964. And Pontiac's GTO was just the vehicle with a 389- 4-speed engine. This original version released by this group peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 Billboard chart. Fun fact: The Beach Boys covered this song too. 2. The Beach Boys- "Little Deuce Coupe" -Gotta like those songs about fast cars and drag racing. A popular activity among youngsters which really took off in the 50's. Remember the famous drag race scene from "American Graffiti." Fun fact: A "deuce" is a car produced by Ford in 1932 (the "2" in 1932 is the "deuce"). They also came with powerful V-8 engines perfect for racing for that "pink slip" daddy. 3. Wilson Pickett- "Mustang Sally" -This song is about a girl who lives a wildlife in her brand-new Mustang car. Guy buys girl a Ford Mustang and "all she wants to do is ride Sally ride." Fun fact: Does anyone remember the song "Funky Broadway?" Pickett's cover of this tune in 1967 was a #1 hit for the artist on the R&B charts! Btw: This song has the honor of being the first charting single to be published with the word "funk" in the title. TRIVIA CHALLENGE ***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play along. Let's see how many answers you know. See if you can guess this selection and the bonus... Name today's tune, artist or facts: 1. This is a great summer car song about a couple reminiscing when they were young. The tune was divided into three sections. 1. The lovers fooling around in the car and "the guy wanting to go all the way tonight." 2. The famous "Phil Rizzuto broadcast" where the "suicide squeeze is on" and the player is about to "score." And the girl's cries of "stop right there!" 3. The male character finally offers his promise: "I started swearing to my God and on my mother's grave/That I would love you to the end of time" And now, "I'm praying for the end of time!" Does this 1977 song ring a bell? -Can you name the song and recording artist? He's a "Bat Out of Hell." Bonus: 2. The Beach Boys also wrote another car song with a title that was just a number. It represents the size of that Chevrolet's engine. Know the title? 3. This 60's duo wrote and recorded many songs about cars. One I really enjoyed hearing on the radio was "Little Old Lady from Pasadena." Other tunes they recorded were "Dead Man's Curve" and Drag City." Can you name this duo from California who were good friends with the Beach Boys? Ok, let's shift those gears and get some correct answers.
