Why do people lie? What is an untruth?

The truth that you speak might often not be being fully understood by others, because it is not being fully given out by you.
Partial truths mislead.
The growth of love, in you, requires a purification of yourself to take place which highlights more and more of the truth that lives in God's love in you.
Lies are merely areas of non-love existing in you.
These areas of non-love are areas of your life that you have not yet fully understood enough about as yet, from your seeing love's truths only in God's ways.
You will acquire this greater understanding when you stop seeing things only from within your own ways anymore.
It is true that truth must always be truth, but when you twist the truth with evil intent, it colours the truth for another person by linking it into fear, rather than into love.
Truth must fully emerge from love, and not be partially hidden by any fears.
Truth must not be made to appear from love in such a way that it is coloured over, or blotted out, with any other non-loving emotions.
The truth lives fully alive only within love, and it lies effectively dead elsewhere.
This means that to give out living truth, you must give out love first. Do what is the most loving thing, and let truth follow this example.
Lies reach into emptiness, and then they will always come up with another lie. Lies spread more lies, because emptiness is always empty of love.
The truth is given out from love when you love.
This is why it takes great courage to love, because it always reveals the truth. Lies, and untruth, only exist within non-love, or fear.
We must not place anything over the top of this truth, as it is revealed through us.
To lie about truth, is the ultimate sin.
One such lie might be that there is no ultimate truth. There is only the truth within each moment.
This is not true, because truth is a pathway that has already been laid down for you by God, right besides you. This is done so that you might walk through his truth, or walk through God. The truth exists to be found. It cannot be created within a moment.
The truth knows you, but you do not know it, until you love God.
This is because truth is revealed from its position within love only when you love the originator of that love.
Love God with your whole heart and being, and truth will grow out of the seed of the truth that has already been planted within you.
You will know this truth as much as you grow its seed into a tree that is strong enough to bear its fruit, and if you do not stunt its growth through a lack of love.
God's love lives within all people. It can be acted upon either consciously, or unconsciously.
People can act consciously from love by wanting to speak the truth. Otherwise, their unconsciousness might unwittingly be speaking lies for them, because they are ignoring their conscious urges to love.
Our heart is always guiding us to love.
We need to consciously take notice of its message.
When we ignore love, we lie, both to ourselves, and to the World.
"A lie told often enough becomes the truth."
Vladimir Lenin, (1870 to 1924) a Russian leader said this.
And, of course, this is a lie, what he said there.
The truth is the truth, and never can it ever become an untruth. It can only be covered over by lies.
Only someone who does not know God, could say something like that, and play games with the truth.

The truth is the truth. A lie is a lie.

I agree it can never become untruth, and I've played around with the truth before, maybe not telling everything or letting others assume a different outcome, but not anymore. I just want to tell the truth.

Yes, the truth always remains the truth.
Even if the truth is covered over with lies and untruths, the truth underneath it all always stays the truth.
We are always better off telling the truth, and living from the truth, as best we can.

@innertalks It's really true. I also want to please God and that means no lies.

@misunderstood_zombie Yes, me too.
l would like to do God's will, and please him with my life, and how it is lived.
Honestly, is like truth too. It can not be diluted; honesty can only be total, and truth can only be truth, totally itself. No half truth is the truth.
We need to be honest, and truthful, in all areas too, not just in some areas.
Even in small things, we need to be honest, and truthful.
It all matters.

When we stick to the truth, we don't have to remember what we had told.
Lies will soon get us into a cesspit of defeatism and cowardice.
We will soon end up with putting out the fire that is self-created. .
It is self-deception to the core living from one falsehood to another.
We will then drown in misery and non-love.
The state of the world reflects our tendency to twist and turn to justify our lies.
Most are afraid of truth and miserly with giving credit where due.
I cannot live in a state where what I tell is doubted.
I know of a few who lie through their teeth!

That's spelling it out nicely, siva.
Sometimes truth is hard to find with our mind, as we argue, and doubt, whether it really is the truth, or not.
We need to follow the truth feeling in our heart, our voice of conscience, that always speaks the truth to us.
On the other hand, there are universal truths, and personal truths too.
Sometimes, our own interpretation and understanding of these will grow over time, and so we need to grow with this, and not inflexibly stick with old truths, that were only half-understood, and which we threw out at others as the gospel truth.
We need to admit, at times, that another's way to truth, might be as equal as ours is too. We all grow to understanding differently, on our own uniquely individualized life journeys.
Truth is truth, and remains truth, but our own understanding of what is truth will grow over our lifetimes, if we allow it to do so, and do not stick with the rigidity of opinion as to what we understand the truth to be, with our minds, rather than our feeling it, in our hearts.

@Shiva49 I never like to spout forth on "truth" that cannot be proven.
Stuff about religion, might or might not contain truth.
I just like to put ideas up for discussion, and leave it at that.
Some people do not care though, and claim that their ideas of truth are really truth, and not just their own ideas of what truth might be.
The real truth, about God, seems to be for God alone to know, for now.

@innertalks Thanks Steve, we, to some extent at least, doubt others' words.
And worse, we also mislead, browbeat, them to suit our ends.
I have tried my best not to waver from the path of truth and I believe I have succeeded.
Of course, I keep quiet, at times, for the sake of avoiding hurting and igniting controversies.
We are influenced by our background, culture, and experiences, but when we are ready to accept differences of opinions, half the battle towards peace is won.
Unfortunately some of our leaders have an attitude of my way or the highway with bloated egos negating the love needed to coexist.

Yes, it says in the Christian Bible that the truth can set us free.
Saint John's gospel, chapter 8, verses 31 and 32.
"So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
We have to know the truth for it yet us free, though, as Jesus said there.
When we lie, we can't know the truth, and as you said, lies just bind us to themselves.
