The holy month of Shavan starts today. The first " Shavan ka Somvar" which means the first Monday of the month Shavan. This month is in the Hindu calendar and is called holy because there is a celestial transit of the planets which affects the physical and mental health of people. That's the reason people all over India offer prayers to Lord Shiva who is omnipresent and gives us the strength to overcome these cosmic effects of the universe through offering that we offer for prayers like bale leaves, rudrakshs, and water from the Ganges. So this is observed in places wherever the Ganges flows. The bale leaves controls blood pressure, the rudrakshs promotes mental peace and keeps away head aches and pure Ganga jal(water), helps good digestion. Our Mythology goes that during this time of the month Lord Shiva drank the poison of Samudra Manthan that signifies that Lord Shiva swallow all the negative effects of the cosmos that would affect the human. Therefore, people offer prayers to Lord Shiva to get his blessings and all the positive energy to face this World's pressure. Monday is called Lord Shiva's day and therefore the Mondays of this months are the most holy. We have the Vedvyas Temple of Lord Shiva where Vyas Dev sat and wrote the Mahabharat. I had gone on one of the Monday's with my husband a few years back to offer prayers in this month of Shavan. Though I pray to Lord Shiva everyday, this particular visit to the Vedvyas temple has lot of importance for me.

I used to fast on Shiv ratri earlier but recently have been denied to fast by the doctor. It is said if you fast the whole day and wish something at twilight, that wish comes true.

@averygirl72 That's what every religion teaches. The Shavan teaches us to be good to others and remove all the negativity from our my minds by remaining calm through prayers and take special food ( called sattvic food in India) that keeps us calm.

@aninditasen I watched a documentary about Buddha before. I'm not sure if it was Shiva. Is Shiva the one who was born to have birthmark on his sole foot? Which is now used and placed on India's flag? correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, it's a holy month for us. My wife goes to the temple daily this month and offers Ganga Jal to the " Shiva Linga". She fasts on Mondays of this month.

The Ganga Jal on Shiv Linga helps in removing the negativity from our lives and the fasting removes the toxin from our body.
