Farm Life

The farm life seems so appealing. I have always wanted a small farm. We have started with a garden, and I love working in the garden. We have chickens and will be getting ducks and goats soon.
I had thought about getting a few cows. For my students, visiting the dairy farm is one of our favorite field trips, but when I see how much work goes into a dairy farm, I think that would be too much for us to handle.
So when I say small farm, the emphasis in on small. I am wondering how easy alpacas would be. I have a friend who has pigs and she said that is a good investment. It would not be for me, though. The only way pigs would benefit is if you raised them for meat, and I would not be able to kill them. I want animals that can be profitable for things other than meat.
I have no problem who raise animals for meat. I eat meat. But if an animal comes onto my property, it gets a name and a family position lol. So it has to be beneficial for things other than meat.
Any farm owners? What advice can you give?

From my experience, alpacas seem quite easy. Angora goats also can be shorn for their fleece. A milking cow, if in milk, needs to be milked regularly so you are tied down unless you can turn the calf loose with her if you want to go away. Dairy goats can also be a tie if you intend to milk them.
