Adam Bede--George Eliot

Adam Bede was written by George Eliot, whose real name was Mary Ann Evans, in 1859. She used a man's name to produce a readership easier to sustain. Many women wrote published books in her day, but she thought a man's name would push her books even further. The story is set at the beginning of the 19th century, and as you probably guessed it's about a man named Adam Bede. He's a wonderful moral man who lives in a modest village, and presently will have his heart broken by Hetty, who lives at her uncle's dairy farm. The concept of the story may appear as a romance genre, but it's far more than that. The characters and their actions are quite interesting, including a Methodist female minister. Mary Evans creates extraordinaire characters in a monotonous, yet lovely landscape. In nearly all books where the rich land owner takes advantage of a beautiful milk maid, then one might suspect that his life is nothing deeper than a terrible existence, but this is not true in our story. He is a sweet and caring man who instigates a desire into a terrible mistake that leaves death and sorrow in his wake. About twenty percent of the book is long winded and boring (similar to this post ), but the remaining eighty percent is exceptional. Have you ever read Adam Bede or any books by George Eliot? https://pixabay.com/photos/hill-wooden-fence-sunset-sunrise-5393685/

Not read this one, at school we covered more recent books like 1984. Having said that, I do peek into The Literary Detective, by John Sutherland, who dissects the classics. I wonder if he has done Adam Bede?

I had never heard of this before so I looked it up on Good reads. One of the critiques lists all of the books he write about and here it is, "Adam Bede: What is Hetty waiting for?" How funny!

I read The mill on the Floss a very long time ago and hardly remember what it was about. It did not much of an impresion so that I would seek another book by her.

The Mill on the Floss is a very slow tedious book, I liked it, but I can see where others may not.

@misunderstood_zombie I have been a very good reader all my life. So much that I studied Literature, taught Latin American Literature at the university and have been a writer in Spanish most of my life. But that book did not leave me any special memory to remember.

I haven't read any of her books. I should make the effort to do so one day.
