Fifty years. Sometimes it seems like 50 million years ago, and other times it seems like yesterday. Music is timeless, so it doesn’t matter which way you feel. This song tops the list of my favorites from 1972.
#1: Pieces of April - Three Dog Night
For a band known for three singers and harmonies, this is a solo vocal. Chuck Negron was the only one left in town when this song was recorded. So he sang it without Danny Hutton and Cory Wells.
It’s hard to think of this song with the harmonies that permeated so many 3DN songs. The happy accident turned out to be the perfect thing for this song.
Good for April, or any other time of the year.
Thanks for reading.

The B-side was “The Writing’s on the Wall,” which was on side two of the album (not that I had the album or anything….
). This was the follow-up single to “Black and White.”

It was a band album. It’s like “Southern Cross” on the 1982 list: that was only Stephen and Graham but it’s still attributed to Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

Interesting…lots of people didn’t know the #1 song on my 1970 list (“Questions” by the Moody Blues) when I did that two years ago. Oh, well, we’ll see what 1973 brings next year.

That’s me. I have a long list of songs lesser known than the big hit that I love far more than the big hit.

I was worried that my brother and I were the only ones who remembered this gem. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by! @misunderstood_zombie (8765)

I remember the band but not this one song. Of course anyone from that time period will think of one, the loneliest number.

Ballads don’t get the airplay that songs like “Celebrate” or “Joy to the World” do.

It’s one of those songs that got overshadowed by the previous hit (“Black and White”).

not a brain, just the owner of a Whitburn that has the B-sides listed.
