This is a sad day for Dodgers fans. Scratch that. This is a sad day for baseball.
Vin Scully has passed away.
The voice of the Dodgers for sixty seven years, Scully died today (August 2).
He retired in 2016, but his trademark “it’s time for Dodger baseball” is still heard at the beginning of games.
As it should be. As it hopefully ever will be.
A true legend in a world where that word is sorely abused.
Vin Scully was 94.
One of his most enduring calls ever:

Vin Scully was part of my childhood . . . as a family we loved our Dodgers. In later years when I got less interested in baseball (life took over), still at home I would hear my dad listen to the radio - I may not have been listening, but I would know Vin Scully's voice anywhere. A true legend indeed - he will be greatly missed!!

@FourWalls That is true - American baseball life. Everyone said he was such a good guy - even if we didn't know him personally anyone could only agree.

He’s so much a part of American baseball life, not just Dodger life, that it’s one of those very few passings that everybody feels. I love what one of the announcers said on the pre-game Friday before the tribute: “Vin blew up Twitter. Nobody could say anything bad about him.”

He did, indeed, and what a legacy he leaves. As a great broadcaster; but, more importantly, as a great person.
One of the tributes I saw on the Dodgers post-game tribute last night had someone (I think it was Steve Garvey) say, “Life is God’s gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to God. And Vin lived a great life.”

They’ve had a recording of Vin saying “It’s time for Dodger baseball” open the radio broadcasts since he retired after the 2016 season. I think one of the greatest things that can be said about him is that people on the Dodgers’ biggest rivals had nothing but love and respect for him.
“Fill his shoes?” No way. George Jones asked that question (see, you said I could always work a song in!
) in the song “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes,” and the answer is nobody. The youngsters who came up to work with Vin were scared, but Vin told them, “Be yourself. Nobody wants you to be anyone else.”
One of Vin’s greatest talents was knowing what to say; but, more significantly, knowing when NOT to talk. In the clip above he was silent for a minute, letting the viewers soak in the moment. They didn’t need him to tell them how to feel or what they were seeing. He never insulted his listeners’ intelligence.

Even people who hated the Dodgers loved Vin. That’s an impact.

I'm a baseball fan but I'm not really familiar with the baseball players.

Oh he wasn’t a player. He was, as they say, the voice of baseball.
