Firefighters in Ludington Michigan admit that they are trained to rescue cats who get in trouble by getting trapped in trees since they cannot climb down a tree without getting hurt from the impact from the landing on the ground. On Tuesday afternoon an owner of a parrot called 911 to ask the Ludington Fire Department to rescue her parrot named Molly who flew away from her home and landed on a branch in a maple tree. The Ludington Firefighters used a ladder truck to rescue Molly and return her to her owner who was very happy that the firefighters were able to reunite the parrot to her owner safe and sound on the same afternoon. I am just wondering why would a parrot who can fly need to be rescued in the first place since I do not think that a parrot is scared of flying back to the ground compared to a cat?

I suppose the owner wanted the parrot brought back to them otherwise it would have flown away That’s my guess.

@RubyHawk That what I am thinking that the parrot decided to get some fresh air for a while since she was unhappy staying inside.

I wondered the same thing although since many parrots spend the majority of their life in a birdcage or flying around inside a home it might not be aware that it can fly back down our where it needs to fly back to.

I was thinking the same thing since my former parrot did stay inside of his case for the majority of the time in his home since if he did leave his cage to fly around, he would stay inside of the home. I believe that parrots have the instinct to stay inside of a home and not fly outdoors.

I have been worried that the cockatoo we are caring for might go up a tree and not be able to get down. But the owner says if you clap your hands the bird will come down to you. Luckily there aren't many trees around.

That is good to know that there is not many trees in your neighborhood where you live in case your cockatoo would fly away on a tree.

I think this is more of the case that the owner didn't want the parrot to fly away and if it were to stay in the tree it would be easier for someone to grab it? This is why if you have a fully flighted or semi-flighted bird, flight training is very important.

Thank you for sharing the facts that parrots need to have flight training as youngsters.

That is true since even though parrots can be mean spirited at times when I had to feed them or clean their cages, they make great pets to be with.

Well sometimes parrots do not want to come home We had a parrot years ago and it flew out of the cage once and would not come home. But in the end, we found it and were able to coax it down.

That is nice to know that your parrot came home after leaving your home for a short while.
