A couple of countdowns ago JJ made a comment in one of the song discussions: What I think would be interesting would be a "Hits that were not Hits" countdown. I don’t know if he had this particular song in mind when he said that, but this and tomorrow’s top song might be two gigantic shockers, given how popular they are. Here’s today’s “non-hit hit.”
#2: Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
Well, how did we get here????
Yeah, the subject of so many memes on Facebook, parodies, and jokes was never a hit. Worse, the original version didn’t even make the “hot 100” list! The live version from Stop Making Sense was released as a single, but it only peaked at 91. As a single, this was a big-time failure.
However, as a song, it’s one of the major marks in the career of Talking Heads, a band that was far more important, influential, and popular than their “top 40” career would show.
Letting the days go by…..
Once in a Lifetime
Written by David Byrne, Brian Eno, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth
Recorded by Talking Heads
From Remain in Light, 1981
Billboard peak chart position: did not chart

That’s generally true of everything. We associate that so much with food, but “taste” goes beyond our taste buds to music, colors, art, and everything else.

@FourWalls Then what about people who like underrated music,Which doesn't even chart, do they have bad taste in music?

@sickly09 — no, they have different taste in music. I’m one of them. A long time ago I did a countdown of really popular songs that “everybody” seems to like but they make me CRINGE when they come on. Doesn’t mean the song is bad, it’s just bad TO ME.

I Like that one. I like how it starts, all crazy and I am like what kind of nonsense is this and then Let the day goes by. Its neat how they made it so weird but then pulled it in to capture the mainstream audience.

@FourWalls So true and why I did not really get into them and I like weird just not that weird. I do like this song though. I guess this is a hit though because they have what 90 million views on Youtube. How is this different from my music. People weird.

@crossbones27 — it was NOT a top 40 hit. Not even a top 80 hit. But it’s so classic. And, I guess, the reason Talking Heads were lumped in the “punk” scene.

David Byrne is “weird” personified!
Seriously, he’s one of the most quirky rock stars in history. Love Talking Heads so much.

They had a top five hit with “Burning Down the House” in 1984.

Oh, yeah, you’re the commie pinko who doesn’t like Talking Heads.

Pretty amazing that some of their “biggest hits” weren’t hits (in terms of top 40 success) at all!

It may not have been a hit per se, but it is a very well known song.

It’s definitely a rarity, and the “spoken” verses are probably why people didn’t like it as a “hit.”

I remember an Anthony Newly song called “The Man Who Makes You Laugh” that I saw him do on Carson one night. I guess I was 14 or 15 when that happened. I later discovered he wrote the big hit “The Candy Man” and the music for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
