In the Northern Hemisphere, October brings us cool weather, the north wind, and dancing colorful leaves. In the Gregorian calendar it is the tenth month and shares a root with octagon and octopus but in Greek okto means eight.
If we consult the original Roman republican calendar then October was the eighth month of the year, and this calendar was only ten months long. The calendar includes Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. January and February have not been added to the calendar, yet. October entered Old English through Old French and replaced the English vernacular term Winterfylleo or Winter full moon.
The holidays we have in October are:
Canadian Thanksgiving October 10
Columbus Day is a federal holiday observed on the second Monday in October
Indigenous Peoples’ Day October 10
Finally, my favorite Halloween on October 31
So in the US Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day are celebrated on the same day.
