Although inevitable, still incredibly sad. Loretta Lynn has passed away. The country music legend, who’s well-known throughout the world, died this morning (October 4) in her sleep at her ranch home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, according to the press release from her children. Born Loretta Webb in the back hills and hollers of eastern Kentucky, her life was a rough one before success found her in 1962. Even after she became famous her life was filled with tragedy: the death of a son in a drowning accident, the loss of her dear friend and mentor Patsy Cline in a plane crash, the abuse and infidelity of her husband, and just recently, the death of the manager of her ranch in a flood. She endured with the tenacity that fueled songs like “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man),” “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’,” and the controversial “The Pill.” Along the way she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Additionally, she was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The biopic based on her autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter, won an Oscar for Sissy Spacek (who was personally chosen by Lynn for the role). She leaves four children, 27 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as a world full of fans and people who admire the daylights out of her. Loretta Lynn was 90. Her iconic autobiographical song “Coal Miner’s Daughter”:

Incredibly beautiful woman, with those lovely high cheekbones that showed her native heritage. I’m so thankful I got to see her in concert.

@RebeccasFarm - yeah. She was 82 at the time and still knocked it out of the park. She sat for the entire concert and blew me away. (So did Ray Price when I saw him…just walked out, sat on a stool, and mesmerized the crowd.) Says a lot for what a good song will do.

Definitely a sad day and loss of yet another great legend—but you are right. Not really shocking considering her age. RIP Loretta, we will keep the lights on for ya.

Shel Silverstein wrote a song for her, “Hey Loretta.” The chorus said, “i love you more than my Irish setter.” Indeed we did. And do.

@FourWalls Good ole Shel Silverstein. Much more than just a guy who knew where the sidewalk ends.

That’s one of those obituaries that gets lots of attention, unlike 99% of the rest of the people I mention monthly.

Absolutely and positively. Even people who don’t know country music know who she was.

I know that’s not your type of music, but I also know you’ve definitely heard of her. She was truly one of a kind.

OMG, It is very sad but she did have a long and blessed life and leaves her music to be enjoyed, I also know how much she loved her husband and will now be reunited with him, and that is the best thing.
