Cyril Derreumaux of Monterey, California kayaked to Hawaii. He started on June 21, 2022, and it took him 91 days and 9 hours. He had tried to make it in 64 days in June of 2021 but failed due to bad weather. He had to call the Coast Guard when the kayak began hitting him violently from side to side.
He modified the kayak with a manual bilge pump, a sea anchor system, a satellite communication system, and, side panels to shield the cockpit from water. He used no sail or motor to propel the kayak. He had also added pedals and a cabin big enough that he could squeeze into it to sleep.
He got into a daily routine. He consumed 4,000 to 6,000 calories daily. He would pedal for four hours in the morning, then have a meal and relax. Two more hours in the afternoon and, two more in the evening before sunset. Then he slept.
It was as much a spiritual trip as it was a physical one. He followed in the steps of Ed Gillet who made the trip in 1987 using an unmodified kayak right off the shelf. Gillett had no way to communicate for 90% of the trip.

I thought about doing some long distance mountain biking when younger.

That's an amazing accomplishment. He took a big chance not being able to call for help most of the time.

Yes, it was an amazing accomplishment. I couldn't be alone out on the open sea that long. I'd go stark raving bonkers.
