Pensioners in India will be taxed now to make their life miserable.

The finance department of India has decided to tax the pensioners of India. As it is the pensioners of India are mostly senior citizens who have lot ailments that the Indian government doesn't take care off. Most senior citizens struggle to meet these expenses and top of that they have to shell out taxes from their income. The government is already collecting huge amount of GST from the poorest of the Indians. In the name of development the politicians are just laundering money inspite of getting free benefits. For their comfort they are not sparing the elderly.

I guess at the end of the day it depends on where the money is coming from? From business pension funds or from the government? I know things are quite different in India than here in the United States, but when it comes to the retirement years, it is always my strong opinion that it is up to the individual to take care of all of their financial needs to the best of their ability during their working years and not be dependent on anyone else to take care of them when they can no longer work. We have to take care of our seniors. But I think the best way to do that is to encourage them to prepare for the inevitable. I also think everyone should pay taxes, including the poor. We all benefit from the system, we should all have to pay our fair share into it. In the United States we have all sorts of poor people who do not pay a penny in taxes screaming for the rich to pay their fair share when the poor don't pay anything, and it is wrong. In fact, it's theft.

The poor and the old are helpless and they are capable of paying taxes. The pension in India that senior citizen are getting from the government is their hard earned money. They faced all odds and served the government for which they are getting their pension. The rest who do some other work aren't paid anything by the government. They have to save their own money for oldage.

@porwest No, it's not social security. It's a amount that the employee deposit throughout his career and the government contributes something to ii only for government employees not for private companies employees. It's the people's hard earned money which they have no right to tax that too after retirement. Through 60 years employees are paying income tax. Then why tax them after 60?

@aninditasen I suspect that the "pension" in India is similar to Social Security in the United States. People think it is a pension, but it is actually a supplement. One is supposed to take care of themselves. Not expect the government to do it for them. If people do not plan ahead, they are fools.

Does your country also have international debt. Sometimes it is used to cover the deficit. If only taxes go to where it should - for the benefit of the people.

We know it's not right but have no other way. The only way is to topple the government or file a Public Interest Litigation against the government.

Is there a policy that those receiving pensions below a certain amount will not be taxed?

@Beestring No, because of the sky rocketing price rise which is making senior citizens difficult to run themselves.
