“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” is hit song from 1976. It was written, composed, and performed by Canadian singer and songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. The song was written to commemorate the sinking of the bulk carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. Lightfoot was inspired by an article in Newsweek “The Cruelest Month.” The song is on his album Summertime Dream. It became a number-one hit in Canada and was on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Cashbox charts.

A classic song I have not heard in years. Did not know it was number one in Canada.

@RasmaSandra Maybe they didn't really listen to what the song was about. That happens sometimes.

I remember hearing that song as a kid. Don’t remember any news about it though.

I actually remember hearing of the shipwreck on the news in the car when I was a child and we were going away as a family one day. That was before the song was recorded of course.
