Sugar balls - a memory

We had gone on a picnic - a school picnic We had to travel by bus to get to the picnic spot and it took us about an hour.
All of us brought some goodies to share and I shared sugar balls Sugar balls were made by my mother. They are simple to make - sugar, water, lime juice, colours and that's it But the consistency is important - not too soft nor not too hard.
Mother's turned out sticky and no one was aware that they were sticky save me . They started with them the moment I shared and instead of chewing they bit them and they got stuck in their teeth and for quite a few minutes none could talk. The cacophony had stopped.
Sugar balls are meant to be chewed and not eaten as one would say nuts. Right?

Yes. Brilliant idea. But my poor mother had no such intentions.
