Over... (Windows 8.1)

Four years ago, after being annoyed constantly with all the Windows 10 updates (several times a day!), I got so frustrated that I decided to downgrade my laptop back to wins 8.1. Life has been beautiful since, until a few days ago, when Windows gave me alerts that by the 10th of January ( in a few days), Windows 8.1 won't be supported any more. I was advised by my young relatives, to: - move to Linux - upgrade to Windows 10 (which won't be supported by 2025) - upgrade to Wins 10 then perhaps from that, partition the hard drive, download Linux to use both operating systems. - just get a Chromebook and forget about windows & its crazy updates altogether, - try MacBooks instead - go get a new laptop with Wins 11 (this laptop is too old for Wins 11!) - don't do anything , just leave it be! - turn an old laptop into a chromebook, - etc I was about to get a chromebook before Christmas, but the stores which have the one I wanted, was not easy to get to. Online purchase is a bit finicky, since the delivery service from those stores are unreliable. After a bit of thinking, I have decided to upgrade this laptop of mine to Wins10, and if it gives me headache again with its annoying updates, then Linux will be the next step for me. This is the weird part of my backup step: drive C with all wins 10 operating system, system files, application files etc used up 600Gb, but all my important personal files are only about 200Gb or less. Does it mean that I have a lot of junks in my Drive C? NB. Disk cleanup informed me just a few minutes ago, that 349Gb was from previous Windows installations. (I removed them now, since there is no way that I can use wins 8.1 again.) --- If you don't see me get back here in the next 24 hours, please say a prayer for me... (I am not good in remembering all bookmarks, passwords, etc. - I will also have to figure out how to stop all those automatically updates before my hair turns more grey than before!)

Windows takes an enormous space on the Hard Disk, it is a cumbersome system and they continue to update and drop the old system to oblige people to buy more powerful computers. I installed Linux and forgot about Windows.

@YrNemo - My husband on his All-in-One PC kept Windows 8.1 and boots from Linux using a USB key. From Linux he can access all his Windows data without being annoyed.

@LadyDuck One of my relatives did tell me that, the problem is, he gave me wrong advices in the past so I tend to take whatever he tells me with a pinch of salt. But I wish I could have done that... So far so good, no update from Wins10 again yet! (I will surely migrate to Linux before the wins11 - enough is enough!)

I am going to do that soon (install Linux), as it is, I am testing this new wins 10 to see if it is similar to the one I had 4 years ago. This time, after more than 4 hours installing & updating, the moment I restarted the machine, it updated again and again - about 3-4 more times. I am doing some experiment this time, by empty/uninstall lots of my unused programs. (Let see, at least all of my bookmarks and personal files are still there.)

I was told by a friend who knows something about computers that the manufactures of computer related industries would secretly detect and figure out what version of the hard drives and devices you are using, and they will technically slow down the speed of some old version hard drives or computers to make you feel that your computer doesn't work properly and that you need a new one, so you would throw it away and buy a new one. I'm not sure about this but it sounds sense-making. Anyway, I hope everything goes well with you.

@YrNemo So what my friend told me was true right? Can't believe that. But imagine they work fast and well as newly bought, who will buy new products lol.

After five hours (or more than that), finally the machine is now with Wins 10. ' Apple products were set up that way weren't they? I heard they got a very heavy fine a few years ago.

I think probably I don't use Windows 8.1 much. I have used Windows 10 for a long time already. Mine doesn't upgrade so much. Usually I will delay the upgrades when I see the notice. In the past my son shut down the upgrades for me, but later the computer was reinstalled and then the upgrade is available again.

I wonder whether because I had lots of extra programs which made wins10 hated me more back in 2018. I most often just sat there looking at my laptop since it would be hijacked by the updates for hours on ends. The moment it finished, it would begin again.

I was so angry while I was waiting for the upgrade to be done, with updating this and that and this and that... 5 hours of my life gone! (I tried to munch on the nuts to release my stress, I tried to watch some Chinese dramas with someone chases after some little piggies... but I couldn't focus! Then I tried to borrow one of my relatives' unused laptop (which was sooooooo slow)!) Microsoft likes to torture us!

I am forced to follow the herd for avoiding issues that may crop up otherwise. Mac is expensive and I worry whether Linux is fully compatible.

I downloaded Linux Mint already, but still thinking about it. As it is, Wins10 seems to make my laptop hotter than usual (and noisy too). Everyone seems to advise me to use Linux instead. I will definite do so, it is just a matter of time now.

Can we do that (disable the updates)? I checked it last time, I couldn't see any such option (guess I checked a wrong area), but it let me delay the updates to the end of February. I plan to sneak back in close to the end of February, and delay the updates further. (I will only update certain things I want. I can't bear the idea of a 4 hour updating period which Microsoft requires to do the task!)

Windows people want to age us faster with their approach. They want to make sure we suffer with them.
