I Adopted Two More Soldiers

Some of you may remember a post I wrote about adopting soldiers from the Soldier's Angels non-profit program back in February. I felt so bad for all the US soldiers being deployed right after the war in Ukraine started that I adopted my limit of three. So then followed months of sending weekly letters and a once-monthly package to 3 different soldiers. You actually only have to send 2 cards/letters per month, and one care package, which can be small or large. But I send something once a week. When one went home, I would adopt another. But then things got a bit too crazy for me, so when the next one went home, I dropped it down the two soldiers. That seemed more manageable. When one of them went home and my time was up with her in mid-December, I decided to take a break and only write to one soldier at a time. Except I just got an email yesterday that there are 630 soldiers who are deployed and currently waiting to be adopted by someone from home in the US. Okay, they got me! I went downstairs and looked at my "care package" bin. I have so much stuff ( candy, moisturizing creams, lip balm, snack bars, etc.) I buy items in advance when I can find them on sale and keep them in a bin. My bin is overflowing currently! So I went online today and adopted two more soldiers. Some of them have been waiting since November for a few months. The two I adopted will be going home in 2 months, so that's not too bad. I can handle that for 2 months, and it will help me to clean out some of the items in my care package bin. If you want to adopt a soldier and you are from the US you can get the information on the Soldier's Angels website. Have you ever written to a soldier who was deployed?

@Kouponkaren I'm sure they do. When I looked up the link, it showed families but not the soldiers themselves.

@just4him You are welcome. It's amazing and the soldiers so appreciate hearing from anyone from home.

Just following The Golden Rule. :0) They also have a program if you just want to write a letter. You have to request to write to one soldier, and you must request a soldier once every month in order to stay active, There are so many soldiers waiting to be adopted that they have another program where people can just send them letters while they wait. You only have to send the soldier one letter though. And then the next week their name is given to someone else. But there is a fee to do this. They ask for $1.00 per month to cover administrative costs. This is called the Soldiers Angels Virtual Letter Writing team. I like tow rite letters, but I prefer to create a relationship with the person I write to so I want the adopt someone that I will have for a while.

I am an Air Force Brat. I have only wrote to family members that were deployed. I can still remember writing my daddy when he was in Vietnam. Also, my brother in law who was deployed several times. I will check the site out. All of my family members are retired now. Thanks

@Tampa_girl7 Oh if you enjoy writing to those who are deployed they can sure use you. Word to the wise, they don't all write back or even email. If you want to adopt someone, I would suggest trying someone who has left a real message in the "message to my angel" area. Sometimes their platoon leader signs up s bunch of soldiers and writes the same message in all of the spaces, and the soldiers don't even know about it. But the ones who write a bit of a real message, and tell you what they like, or write a real message in that spit, often you will get some communication back from them if that's important. It is important to me. If I don't hear back at least once if feels like I am writing to a ghost!

What a good scheme. Don't think we have anything like this, at least at the moment

@Ronrybs I like writing so it's very rewarding to me to do it. I send cards and letters too. The cards are a lot easier and quicker to send than the letters.

How kind of you to do this. Do you adopt them while they are deployed then stop communication when they return to the US?

@merrybelle2021 Yes, you only adopt them while they are deployed. We are given a "stop mail" date, and that is approximately the date they are going home, so we are told to stop sending mail 1 month before that date. In fact, they totally drop off our account on the website 30 days from that date.I usually send one more letter or card after the drop off just so they get 1 more thing from me before they actually leave.

@jstory07 Did you write and send packages to him? Some of these soldiers have no one that writes to them. Many have families that are too poor. And they are very appreciative of anything the receive.

That is wonderful you are able to do that. I have sent care packages to family and friends when they did/are serving and always added some extras so they could share with their friends. May God bless you for your kindness and compassion.
