Short story: The Zen master zenned on in his zen, as nobody was yet ready to replace him from his monastery

The Zen master, Artrop Zerploski, had recently given a koan, constructed by himself, to his students to solve.
The best answering student would be appointed as the new Zen master of the monastery, as he, Artrop, was getting old, and he was going to soon retire, but still carry on in the background, but with not such a heavy workload, as before.
This was his koan:
"Emptiness is never really empty of anything except that which you empty it of."
One student said that this meant, that there really no such thing as emptiness, as everything contains some energy in it, no matter how small.
Another student said that it meant that emptiness is only empty because we have taken things out from it, leaving it empty, and so all emptiness is an artificial construct, whereas the natural situation of all things is not to be empty, but full of the energy of love.
The last student to have a go at this koan said, this koan just shows the coming senility of our master. He has an empty mind now, and describes his own self here, but his mind is empty, not because of his Zen, but because it has become empty through lack of thoughts, due to his dementia.
The master then spoke to the assembled students, and said:
"Emptiness adds nothing, nor does it take anything away from itself, or from anything else, for that matter."
"In mathematics, zero is zero, and everything added to zero, still leaves zero there, as the new number is zero plus that number, but which is not zero now, but that number."
"Emptiness is the field from which all else springs, so in potential, emptiness is everything."
"I see that none of you is yet ready to step into my shoes, and so, I must continue on now, as your Zen master."
"'If emptiness is endless, then everything rests in emptiness.'"
"Dejan Stojanovic, a Serbian poet, said this."
"Yes, emptiness is all, and all springs forth from emptiness into existence."
'"Everything unfolds from emptiness.'"
Lao Tzu, the great Chinese philosopher, said this.

Apparently, there was a void, or emptiness, before the Universe started too.
Emptiness is not empty then, because it is full of potential that can create things from it, and so, yes, everything expands from this emptiness, and knowledge, therefore, expands too, from our observing of what is happening.

@innertalks If the emptiness wasn't there we would have never gotten out of the stone age.

@RubyHawk Well, if we empty our hearts of love, we might one day go back to the stone age again too.

Emptiness here is more an abstract idea, meaning that if we are full of ourselves, we have no room for taking on extra learning.
We need to empty ourselves of false ideas, before truth can be properly received. This is what it means, that it all starts from emptiness.
This Zen koan illustrates this point.
A Cup of Tea
Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

The last student had a go, let it rip, with a devil-may-care attitude.
To his credit, the Zen master did not take offense at all.
Zero kicks in when other numbers precede it.
Zero is a hero when any other number, however big it may be, becomes zero when multiplied by zero!
We should have room to accept new ideas rather than go about with a feeling that we are know-all.
Imbibe everything and add value - so zero is zen in terms of knowledge.
I tend to keep an empty mind so that I don't carry baggage and that will encourage the free play of inputs.

Yes, an empty mind is often good, but if a cold heart goes with it, that is not good.
We should always keep the fires of our heart burning, and never empty of fuel.
Zero is powerful too, as no number can be divided by zero. The result is said to be undefined, or unknowable, although, I have heard the answer said to be infinity too.

@innertalks We have the mental acuity to react to a given situation.
We should be open to receiving inputs that are enriching to us and others too.
We should also share those that are likewise.
Zero cannot be belittled/trifled with. It can bite back to make mincemeat of other numbers!

@Shiva49 Yes, sharing our insights, gives extra insight to the global vision of the world too.
We should not rest on our laurels, too tired of life, and then giving a zilch input, while still taking all we can take.
