I am down to 6 cats.
At one point I had over 20 and all of them got along pretty well, there never were big fights.
Now I'm down to 6 cats.
I have 2 cats that hate other cats. I have 2 cats that bully, there is no other word for it, the youngest cat. I have 1 cat that wants another cat to be her 'boyfriend.'
And I have 1 cat, ONE cat, that all the others like well enough, even the 2 that hate other cats. If this 1 cat is next to one of them, they don't go hissing and carrying on.
This cat is my second oldest, she's 10 and her name is Heidi.
Her picture is my avatar.

Teeny, the calico, is the cat that is bullied by the two black cats. Elizabeth wants Boris to be her boyfriend and Teeny and Boris are buddies because they spend the nights together in the front room. Boris does because we need to make sure he's eating the special kidney food and we have always had to make sure kittens were safe because Boe, the dog, has tried to kill kittens. So, between wanting to keep Teeny away from Boe when we first got her and company for Boris. Now we also keep her there so the two black cats don't bully her all night long.

They should all be grateful to have a warm home that comes with such good staff.

There is always one with positive energy. My cat Nico is a bully with a bad attitude. He bullies the dog who visits and loves to intimidate him. However, part of that is because he sees the dog as invading his territory. I really would like to get another cat, but not sure how he would be.

Sometimes, with proper introductions, a kitten will be accepted. Both of my dogs came during the nearly 5 years between getting Heidi and Opal. A few cats I had when we got Boe, the older dog now 14, taught him respect for keeping out of the grown cats' faces. However, he has tried to kill kittens, succeeded with outside feral kittens in fact, so we have to keep little kittens away from him.

When I had many cats they all got along but now I have only one and he does not like the male kitten that visits us.
Your Heidi seems docile and 10 years is pretty old for a cat.

She's really no docile, she's just agreeable. Today, while I was doing the cat boxes, she was sitting in one of the cat trees we have by them. Then she saw Teeny, the calico, and was trying to catch Teeny's tail. While Teeny lays near her to protect her from the bullies, she wasn't too sure she wanted Heidi to catch her tail.
Meanwhile, Boris chases Heidi's tail, seldom even touches it, but he tries.

No, Heidi isn't too old to fight, she is Boris' number two wrestling buddy, number one is Teeny, the calico, now that she's grown up. Teeny is actually laying with Heidi because she's the one the two cats bully, but they won't go after her when she's with Heidi.

She does. Because she was here before all the others, except for my remaining feral, Elizabeth, she's like the one they all look up to. Age and time in the 'colony' doesn't necessarily mean respect, but since Heidi was bigger than all the other cats when they got here, she's was able to exert a certain amount of respect on the later kittens.
