Wwoofing and Workaway: Free Room and Board in Exchange for Help

United States

Would you like to be a "wwoofer"? Would you like to "workaway? These two programs have opportunities in the US and around the world for people who want free room and board while traveling. In exchange for free room and board, you must agree to do work around the host's home and acreage. Some of the work involves helping with animals and plants around their homestead. Other involves helping build and fix things. Each host has a list of rules of what they need and what they offer. Many of them eat family-style meals so the volunteer would be expected to eat with the families. As far as accommodation, the range is anywhere from a room in the family home to a cabin or yurt on the property. I have already shared that someday van life is something I would like to experience. I think both of these programs are something I would like to look into in order to save money. If you want to learn more, you can just Google bot those phrases and find out all about them. What do you think? Would you want to be a wwoofer or workaway?

I would like the job if I can handle the work assignments.

@Deepizzaguy Each family that is looking for help wants different things. 1 family needs help with their huge vegetable gardens, another one that's in Alaska needs help with their sled dogs, and another one I read needs help building a cabin. The websites are both chock full of interesting places to stay and help...all to live and eat for free.

If I was younger I could well be tempted. Nothing too strenuous, of course!

Not now. That would have been fun when I was younger.

Some years ago, our son wwoofed in several countries. He mostly enjoyed it but sometimes the hosts would try to take advantage of the young people.

I hope the work assignments are pleasant and not something tough or too filthy. We have done homestay at our vacations in the past on some lovely properties. We really loved it. We got warm welcome, good treatment and lovely home made local cuisines with the family. It was fun to learn the culture and traditions. Yes, we paid for all the hospitality but no chores and work assignments.

Well it sounds good in theory, but in reality, what if you went to a serial killers house?

I think I would like that better than living in a van

No, I've just always wanted to be home except for a vacation or visiting the kids.

I've never tried either but I know WWOOF has been around for a long time (I thought about it as a teenager!) and one of my friends did it and it was a great experience.
