Odd Dream About Retirement

Last night I dreamed that all the students and staff at my school held a big retirement party for my friend Lynn and me. Lynn is the principal of our school and is also retiring at the end of this year. At the end of the party, everyone except Lynn and me boarded a train and rode off into the future. Lynn and I were left behind on the platform watching the train leave without us. When it was out of sight, she turned to me and said, "I guess that's it then." The dream ended on that note. It doesn't take a soothsayer to interpret this dream, does it? Have you ever had such a spot-on dream about your future?

When I was home recovering from surgery I had a dream about being back at my command that was so vivid I was afraid to open my eyes, thinking I was back in Norfolk!

I can relate. After 36 years, I still have dreams about being late to report for duty and unable to find my uniform. Some things never leave you.

@DWDavis Till 6 to 7 years back, I had dreams about not at all preparing for my physics or Chemistry Practical exams ( I had Science and Engineering as my majors). And that made me so worrisome in the dreams. Plus getting late for the exams, when in reality I was quite punctual with practical exams and main exams. But well dreams actually indicate other fears or may be omens!

That is pretty amazing, isn't it? There isn't much left to say after that.

Last week, my friend and I were discussing what the school would be like with the two of us gone. I've only been teaching there for six years, but have been involved as a volunteer, commission member, Scout leader, and coach for 28 years. My friend has been there for over 30 years and principal for 28 years. My absence will be a minor blip. Hers will bring about a sea change. I suppose this could have been behind the dream.

@JudyEv Finding a principal is difficult in these days when education and educators are under constant political attack. One of our sister Catholic schools has been without a principal for 8 months because no one is even applying for the job. The teachers are running the school by committee. If that happens at my school, all the more reason to be glad to be out of there.

@DWDavis That's a long time to be principal. There might be a lot of changes made with a new one - which doesn't mean that they'll necessarily be good. And you've done more than your share too. Good for you. No wonder you're looking forward to retirement.

Wow, what a dream! I can't think of a dream I've had that was so spot on. I'm sure I had them, but I just can't think of one. I did have a dream one time of my dad as a teenager working for a logging company, and they would float the timber down canals to the saw mill. One day many years after, we were all going for a drive, and we passed a canal that looked exactly like the one in my dream. I exclaimed from the back seat of the car, "I know that canal!" And then before I could say another world, my dad said "When I was a teenager I worked for a logging company and we used to float the logs down that canal to the lumber mill." I was absolutely floored at that moment.

@DWDavis I sometimes wonder if memories ever get embedded in DNA and then passed down through generations. Do you think something like that is plausible?

Once, when I was travelling, I dreamt that my boyfriend left me. I called him and he assured me it was just a bad dream. Then when I got home he came over and ended our relationship (after 12 and a half years).

It didn't feel nightmarish, just a little sad, as though, by retiring, I was leaving the future in someone else's hands.

Could the dream mean that you both decided to stay and give it another year.

Many a days, I don't have a dream. Sometimes I do have a dream and the past and the future looks so mixed up in them!. "... It's then...." was probably a dialog in a movie I saw a few years back.

Aw, what a sad sort of ending to the dream. I have not had a dream such as that. Hey, you could write a book about it DW.

That's good you didn't ride on that train on your dream. Someone told me if dream riding anything, there's a bad sickness awaiting.

How strange that dream was. Your subconscious has really been working on that.

I wonder if the dream relates to thoughts I am having about what comes after I retire but the school goes on.

I'll have been retired ten years, this April, and not had a dream like that. I do occasionally dream of being in the office and it is all going horribly wrong

I do still dream about being late reporting for military duty and unable to find my uniform. I haven't dreamed about scenes from my time as an accountant.

The dream expressed your feelings about your future. I have never had dreams about my future.
