Pineapple peel drink

We all like pineapple and eat one fairly often. Someone on here, I think it may have been @marguicha, mentioned that a tasty drink can be made from the discarded peel, so I thought I would try it. After a bit of further research I just put the peel in a large jar, added a couple of spoons of Demerara sugar and filled it up with water, then left it on the kitchen counter, loosely covered, for about three days. After that I strained the liquid through a filter paper (usually used in coffee machines) and kept it in the fridge. It did indeed make a tasty and refreshing drink. Obviously there was some fermentation going on, so there must have been a little bit of alcohol in there (just like home-made ginger beer) and if I kept it too long I suspect I would end up with something stronger (and there would be the risk of the bottle exploding if I put the lid on tightly!), but I drank it in a couple of days so that was OK. Definitely something to do again – in fact the next jar is fermenting as I write. So thanks for the suggestion! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

That's nice the pineapple won't waste at all, even if its peels are quite useful

That's right, and then I still get to add the strained peel to the compost afterwards, to help with my vegetable growing!

This is news to me I always thought pineapple skin was bad for health or even poisonous specially those black things (thorns?) that one sees and that is why we always removed the skin thick and dense.

@Fleura Right from childhood we have discarded the skin and now I will never get to like it The skin that we remove and throw is pretty thick

I had never heard that, I had to investigate and it seems you are right, there can be some adverse effects if the pineapple is not ripe. Skin from ripe fruit is fine though, and even beneficial

@allknowing You could try it, you might discover something new! Yes the skin is quite thick, just chop it up and add it to a jar of water with a bit of sugar. You don't eat the peel, just discard it after 2 or 3 days.

@Fleura We thinly slice cucumbers and put in a pitcher with water, stevia and a bit of citrus. We like lemon or orange. Add all of this to taste, put in icebox overnight, Regular sugar can be used too. It tastes very refreshing. It’s even better on a warm day.

I also really like pineapple, it tastes sweet, sour, and refreshing. It's one of the fruits that I always look for when I'm sick. But I don't really understand about the drink you are discussing, does it use pineapple skin or what kind of skin?

Yes, just the outside of the pineapple that is generally cut off and thrown away.

@astutimeliana723 When making it, keep at room temperature. But after straining, keep in the refrigerator, loosely capped, and drink within two or three days.

More pineappley, but less sweet than an actual pineapple. I didn't add a lot of sugar, obviously you could adjust to your taste.

This is good to know. No need to buy pineapple flavored drinks anymore. Do you still drink tang?

That's good to know you've had success with this. I remember reading Marguicha's discussion about it.
