How the Word Serendipity Can Help During the Winter Months

The definition of serendipity is as follows: 1. discovery of something fortunate: the accidental discovery of something pleasant, valuable, or useful 2. gift for discovery: a natural gift for making pleasant, valuable, or useful discoveries by accident When we are in a depressed mood if we begin to use words such as Serendipity we may find that we can change our mood. Finding a more positive way of looking at life and the people we come into contact with can definitely change our mood. Movement and rearranging our life can help too. This time of year a lot of people are suffering from depression and in some cases SAD(Seasonal Affective Disorder) also known as winter blues, seasonal depression, winter+Depression, and summer +Depression is related to the amount of daylight a person gets during certain times of the year. About 500,000 people may have winter-onset-Depression and another 10-20% have a mild form. It is more common in women than in men and usually doesn’t start in people younger than 20 years old. The risk of SAD decreases as adults get older. It is usually more prevalent in the northern regions where winter lasts longer and is harsher. Symptoms of SAD are weight gain, craving for starchy or sweet foods, oversleeping, drop in energy level, fatigue, problems concentrating, irritability and anxiety, avoidance of activity you used to enjoy, and sensitivity to social rejection. Having this during the Winter months is no fun. Do you have it or do you know someone who does?

I enjoy the four seasons. It does get dark but I just look forward to Spring when that will change. Good that you keep active. I think the writing helps too. Keeps the brain active and that is so important.

I learned to keep myself active and even walking in the woods with my husband in Latvia. We lived in the suburbs and there were many wintry walks we could take so winter always was kind of a joy too despite the cold. Now in Florida it almost seems to me that one season just melts into another except when it gets really cold here,

I like the four seasons. Good that you are keeping active. The cold, crisp air can be nice unless you get too much. Burr!

I've never had it. My current weight gain is because of too much good stuff to eat at potlucks. Those desserts are killers for weight loss. But boy do they taste good. Winter is my happy time. I love snow and right now, I'm enjoying the weather as we're in the middle of a wonderful winter storm. We're supposed to get a foot of snow. I hope they're right.

I quit trying to maintain my weight. One of the few joys I have in life is eating. I know how you love the snow, Valerie. Inside I enjoy it too.

@celticeagle I enjoy eating too, but I would like to get my weight down to where it needs to be for my health and well-being. Thank you. I am enjoying it.

Fortunately, it takes a lot to get me down. I'm basically a happy person. I'm sick of winters, so prefer to spend them in Florida where it is sunny, beautiful, and can do everything I do up north in the other seasons down here. It's like living in paradise.

I envy you. I wish I could say I was a happy person. I do try to be positive and I enjoy making others laugh. I enjoy the four seasons but sometimes I really have to try hard to stay balanced. It's gotten better over the years. I am sure glad I have this site to go to and such lovely folks to communicate with.
