Ready to Grind Away

With my new coffee grinder, that is. I used the last of the gift cards I received from my students at Christmas to buy a new coffee grinder - the one in the photo. Now, I am not a coffee connoisseur but do know what I like, and I like fresh ground coffee. I have a small coffee grinder, but it only makes enough for three six-ounce cups at a time. The new grinder will let me grind enough for 12 to 18 cups at a time. I keep the fresh grounds in an hermetically sealed steel container K bought me for Christmas. It keeps them fresh for the week to 10 days it takes me to go through a pound of freshly ground beans. The small coffee grinder will move to the camper so that I can enjoy fresh ground coffee when away from home was well. Eventually, I would like to try roasting my own coffee beans. Perhaps that can be my new hobby after I retire. Do you enjoy coffee? If you do, do you prefer it freshly ground?

I've used fresh ground for maybe 25 years now. I bought locally roasted beans (several sources here) and ground them as you say. When my wife & I got married, she had this Capresso coffee maker that grinds and brews up to ten cups. We used it up until recently, then replaced with a newer model. It's kind of spendy, but great coffee. It has a timer I can set, but I just hit the button when I get up. We make a pot full and drink it all most days.

I don't have a local roastery near me right now. The coffee shop I frequent when I visit Carolina Beach sells locally roasted beans and I usually pick up a pound when I visit there.

@JamesHxstatic I hope my house will have that aroma if I start roasting my own beans.

It's very rare that I drink coffee but if I do, I drink the premade iced coffee. Like the starbucks canned or bottled drinks. But its about once a month if that.

I have cut back to only one or two cups a day. If I'm only going to drink so little, I want it to be very good coffee.

@thislittlepennyearns I prefer iced coffee myself these days and have learned how to make it at home using the Keurig. But on rainy, chilly nights like tonight, I prefer a nice steaming cup of decaf with a little of my Carolina Beach rum in it.

@DWDavis I have never been big on hot coffee. When I was a teen in Portland, Oregon I went to starbucks two or three tiems a day, and got burnt out on it.

That’s a good idea to move the small grinder to the camper to still be used. We have a small one and it makes a big mess if tipped on the side while grinding beans. I have only bought whole bean coffee once for myself that was strawberry flavored. My husband hated me using the grinder for that as he had to wash it out saying he could taste it in his coffee. His coffee is awful my strawberry would have improved it .

@DWDavis that sounds so good. I hope you are able to figure out the perfect blend to make your own once you have more time.

Ages ago I found a shop that sold a blend called Southern Pecan. I haven't found it anywhere since. I tried making my own with the smaller grinder using roasted pecans but wasn't satisfied with the flavor. I may try again now.

My missus dislikes coffee. She is a tea drinker.

Sounds like a wonderful way to use those gift cards. I only drink one cup of coffee a day, and it only has to be hot to be good.

When you only drink one or two cups a day, it needs to be good coffee.

@DWDavis It's good enough for me. I've had all kinds of bad and good coffee and know what I like and don't like. Luke warm and bitter are a big no-no for me.

I have never seen unroasted coffee beans for sale, but I am not a great coffee drinker so don't keep an eye out for that kind of thing

I have found some sites online where I can order raw beans. I will start small.

@DWDavis Hadn't thought about it, but I am guessing the roasting process is a rather delicate operation

Oh this will be superb DW! I can smell those freshly ground coffee beans just looking at this. I buy Pete's coffee now already ground but it is very fresh and does me fine for now.

I've tried Pete's coffee and enjoyed it very much. However, I have a dear friend who works as a manager at a Starbucks and tends to drop off bags of beans to me at school when she receives some promotional packages. My future DIL also likes to buy me bags of whole beans from places she and my son visit in the hopes I'll brew some up and share it with her.

You might need a hobby or three once you retire but your writing will take up some time I guess.

I do like coffee, I have a couple of cups every morning and sometimes another cup during the day, I haven’t bought the whole coffee bean. I buy it ground.

I started on whole bean after I received a pound of very exquisite beans from a friend one Christmas. That's when I bought the small grinder. I've been hooked on freshly ground ever since.

@DWDavis Freshly ground coffee might be tastier than ground coffee.
