Making Sourdough Bread for the First Time

My husband and I went to Alaska on a cruise in August and I bought an Alaskan sourdough bread starter. My husband loves sourdough bread and I thought it would be fun to make bread from scratch.
So I added flour and water to the starter last night, but I am not sure how this will come out. I think I added too much water, and I am not sure the "warm water" was hot enough. Later on, I was reading inline that the water should be 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Oops.
The starter packet came with a recipe booklet. This may end up being a disaster but time will tell. I will let you know how it comes out.
If you have ever made sourdough bread before and have any tips for me, I would greatly appreciate them!

Why it is called sourdough?
Because it is sour?

Yes, I believe so. It has something to do with the yeast.

Thanks. I do as well. I will give a report after the 2 loaves are done.

@Kouponkaren I'm sorry you didn't cure it long enough. Everything takes practice.

Well, I made 2 loaves and they don't taste very sour. But they do taste good. It's a very dense bread. I froze one for another week when we want some homemade bread. The problem apparently is that I didn't wait long enough for it to cure. According to one of my friends, the longer it ages, the more sour the finished bread tastes. So I will make the starter again (I used all the other starter for 2 loaves of bread and some pancakes). And I ill let it sit n the fridge and keep feeding it for a few days before I try again.

Thanks. Me too. I really don't want to waste a lot of time and ingredients in bad bread.
