Short story: Purpose often lies below the surface of our words

Nothing done from love is ever done wrongly

The old Zen master, Artop Zerboski had been giving his weekly lectures to anyone that wanted to come to the meeting room in his monastery, insiders, and outsiders, for the best part of 40 years. One student said to him, wearyingly: “What has been the point of these lectures?” “Do you think that someone from day 1 of your talks, would still be around, and would remember even one word that you had said that day?” The old master smiled deeply and replied: “Love goes out and does its job in its own way for whoever is around to hear it.” “Once gone out, it only comes back to the sender, when the hearer, the feeler of that love, has felt it truly, and during these talks of mine, I have felt that this happened during every talk that I gave, as at least one person in my audience received my words with love, and returned the love to me as thanks for my words, that he had received, and made a benefit for him in his life, on that day.” The student replied: “Yes, when love penetrates into someone in your audience, I have seen their face glowing. Your words were carved permanently into their hearts, it seemed.” “Oh,” said the master, “You knew the reason all along. You were just wanting to see if my answer matched your own thinking.” “When we give talks like I do, they are serving a holy action, and purpose too.” “Thanks,” said the student, “I was not really questioning your reason for talking; I was more trying to better understand your reason behind them, your talks.” The master then said: “If all we do is from love, nothing we ever do is in vain.” Photo Credit: The photo used in this article was sourced from the free media site, pixabay.com Nothing done from love is ever done wrongly.

Yes, parents too do the same although teenage children resent anything that sounds like advice. I do that with my son too and then it is up to him to react, take it to heart, or discard it. The quote attributed to Edmund Burke comes to mind “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. We need men/ women of wisdom to speak out when they feel it is necessary to do so. That is a nice way to express their love towards others and concern for their wellbeing.

Yes, we should not leave our gold buried in our hearts, but give it out to others who can use some of it too. Nobody knows how far a kind word might go sometimes.

@innertalks: I met a casual acquaintance a couple of days ago. He was quoting those I had told him years ago. I had forgotten a few. That vindicates what you have said. My words (of wisdom?) did find their mark at least on that person! On top of that, he had also shared them with many others!

@Shiva49 Yes, some words sink deep, and sound so full of truth, that we like to pass them on to others too.

Your discussions always contain wonderful and inspiring thoughts. What I like the most is this line: “If all we do is from love, nothing we ever do is in vain.” If even one person is positively affected by one word that we say or one action that we do, then that would be enough to indicate our existence. Thank you for these jewels of learning. God bless.

Thanks. I always try to write something meaningful, and uplifting. The philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson said this: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived." To my mind, he could have said this too: "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have loved."
