The English left behind loads of things for us to learn specially what goes on the dining table The list is too long and those who are familiar with this will know. I like many of the things they have left behind specially having a retinue of maids to care for us We had four but in course of time they are now reduced to one maid and one gardener who we keep changing as either they leave or we send them. We liked using the tea set, having a dessert after a meal, ...........the list is endless. I can never eat with my fingers as we use the cutlery - fork, spoon, table knife, small spoon for dessert, and spoon for soup. There are a few others too but that we have not included. Since I was very young I was taught to eat using cutlery, eating with fingers is considered gross.

@allknowing Also Moroccans do, I had to eat with fingers when we went there. They did not even supply cutlery.

that is for formal dining for us. If just an ordinary day, just a spoon, fork, and knife. It depends on the food.

I use tablespoons for servings small bowls of vegetables etc but other than that I always use a regular spoon to eat with. We had soup spoons when I was growing up and I didn’t like them.

In my country, even the less affluent people eat with cutlery. Maybe they don´t have a different fork for each dish but they would never eat with their hands. We only eat a couple of things with our fingers (empanadas are one of them). I don´t know how it is in the younger generation with the example of American TV where everyone seems to eat with their fingers and their don´t sit around a table to eat.

@allknowing Thinking about it we do eat some food with our fingers. But at least in my family, we eat around the table and we do not watch TV while eating. In my house I have only one TV and it is in my room. When someone comes, we dine together and tslk. Sometimes when there´s something very good on TV, we change our eating hours and watch TV before or after eating. At the finals of the Football World Cup, we made appetizers to eat while we were watching the match. After it we ate.

We had the usual cutlery plus chopsticks! We sometimes used those bigger Chinese soup spoons too.

The Victorians loved to have specific tools for every task and every occasion. Fish knives, soup spoons, dessert forks, sugar tongs, grape scissors... I still have many of these. My favourite is a silver dish specifically for sardines!

I wasn't taught the "proper" cutlery. My uncle tried to teach me how to set a table, but I didn't really learn.
