The wind was blowing rather steadily and small craft warnings had been issued when we visited the seawall at Fort Fisher yesterday. Very few of the seabirds were taking wing. Most were perched on the rocks of the seawall as were the bunch in the photo. Fort Fisher, the site of one of the pivotal battles in the Civil War, was a sand fort and relatively little of it remains thanks to beach erosion. The rock seawall was put in place in 1999 to stop what was left of the fort from being washed away. The area is a great place to visit. There is a small museum about the Civil War-era fort, a very nice aquarium, and a state beach with changing rooms and picnic areas. There is also a stretch of the beach where you can take your 4-wheel drive vehicle out on the strand to reach great fishing spots. If you're ever in the area, I hope you get a chance to see some of the sites Fort Fisher has to offer.

It looks like a wild, beautiful place to visit. The birds look right at home.

@DWDavis Do you mean those huge rocks could wash away?

@RubyHawk Hopefully not. The rocks were put there to stop the island from eroding away.

That sounds like a really amazing place to visit. My husband and I would both enjoy that which isn’t often . Beautiful view in this photo. Smart move them putting the rock wall there. Sad so much of the sand fort was destroyed but nature is destructive.

It truly is. I've been going there since I was a kid and lived up the road in Wilmington.

Sounds like a great place to visit & looks like parts of our Oregon coast too. The state owns the land along the beach here, so we have access to the entire coastline. It can't be fenced off.

Here in NC, ownership ends at the high tide mark. We can walk any part of the beach at low tide and the greedheads that own the condos can't stop us.

That sounds a really lovely spot. There are a lot of beaches being washed away recently.

Some of North Carolina's Outer Banks islands are only still there because of beach restoration projects that pump the sand from the ocean floor and spread it back on the shore.

@DWDavis I think they've tried carting loads of sand onto our beaches in places but it's a huge task and, with the next big storm, they are back to square one.

If I would have the chance, I wanted to experience seeing them up close, too.

@Fleura From home to the campground is about 2 hours depending on traffic. It's another 15 minutes or so to the area where the photo was taken.
