The wind was blowing rather steadily and small craft warnings had been issued when we visited the seawall at Fort Fisher yesterday. Very few of the seabirds were taking wing. Most were perched on the rocks of the seawall as were the bunch in the photo.
Fort Fisher, the site of one of the pivotal battles in the Civil War, was a sand fort and relatively little of it remains thanks to beach erosion. The rock seawall was put in place in 1999 to stop what was left of the fort from being washed away.
The area is a great place to visit. There is a small museum about the Civil War-era fort, a very nice aquarium, and a state beach with changing rooms and picnic areas. There is also a stretch of the beach where you can take your 4-wheel drive vehicle out on the strand to reach great fishing spots.
If you're ever in the area, I hope you get a chance to see some of the sites Fort Fisher has to offer.

That sounds like a really amazing place to visit. My husband and I would both enjoy that which isn’t often
. Beautiful view in this photo. Smart move them putting the rock wall there. Sad so much of the sand fort was destroyed but nature is destructive.

Sounds like a great place to visit & looks like parts of our Oregon coast too. The state owns the land along the beach here, so we have access to the entire coastline. It can't be fenced off.
