About throwing away. Recycling.

I just read a post by @fleura about throwing away and recycling. And I remembered again that in my country people have turned the beautiful Atacama desert into a dumpster. When I when there with my husband over 30 years ago, the dirt was near the highway. From the vehicle´s window you could see cigarette butts and packages, banana peels and dirty diapers. I was shocked. But later on I read that now, in my country, they buy cheap clothes in containers. They make enough money only if they sell a few of the garments. The rest is taken away to illegal dumpsters in the desert and there are mountains of those clothes made with man made fibers. And I have also seen that there is an "island" of plastic somewhere in the ocean that is a big as Australia. We are now starting to recycle a bit here. But I´m sure that we recycle a lot less than what we throw away. I raised my 2 daughters with cloth diapers. Surely it was not fun. But it is better than to do some math on how a diaper is made and then multiply by what they use. My first daughter was rich. She had 42 diapers as I was given an extra half dozen. My second daughter was born a little over 2 years later. By then Tania only used diapers at night and they often came out clean. I washed the 36 best ones for Claudia and those were hers. As a second baby, she had 6 less than her sister. I never thought that I was a heroine because I was using them. I could name a thousand things we all did then that meant our planet was not as polluted. Please do recycle!!!

It is horrifying, the great pacific garbage patch is unbearable to think of. How can anyone think it's OK to live like this? Like you, we used cloth nappies/diapers too. I bought lots second hand and was given others, we used them for both daughters and then we passed them on to another friend who also used them for two children. So they were used at least five times - that was good value!

My daughters used uniforms for school then. I learned to sew and made their white blouses with my husband´s old white shirts. I still have second uses for many clothes and even though I cannot sew now, I use any discarded cloth to clean window panes, kitchen counters and, when I had a car, to wash the car.

@marguicha You and I could both write dozens of posts about ways to re-use old things!

The world has become a dumping ground for plastic. I've done several articles on plastic pollution; and the statistics are staggering. We all need to be more careful of what we throw away.

I have done cloth diapers with all three of my kids. People thought I was such a weirdo with my daughter but now it’s more common and there are lots of cloth diapering companies. I am happy to see this! There is a mountain by us that is entirely man made it was a dump they covered one with dirt. I reduce reuse and recycle as much as possible.

I started out with my daughter in cloth diapers. The pollution from just one child using disposable diapers is just too much. People nowadays are spoiled and don't think about what their trash means to the future of our planet. Many do not even believe there is a problem.

Most things are made to be disposable anymore sadly.

We did recycle, but unfortunately it is not in our culture, so most students don't.

We recycle as much as possible. Many neighbors do too.
