An aimless sofa

Yesterday evening we were doing a crossword after dinner. It wasn’t a very intellectual puzzle, just an easy one, but it’s fun for us all to do together. Anyway, one of the clues was ‘an armless sofa’ (answer: ottoman) but at first glance I thought it said ‘an aimless sofa’ and then we all started giggling about the mental image of a poor aimless sofa, not knowing what to do with itself I could just imagine something rather like a cross between the animated footstool in Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and Talkie Toaster from the comic sci-fi series Red Dwarf, wandering about looking for something to do and then springing into action if anyone looked as if they might want to sit down, maybe suggesting they might like to put their feet up or wheedling that it would be good to have a little rest Have you misheard/misread something that made you laugh? Heh. Whenever I see a sign on the road that says "Houses for sale," I think it reads "Horses for sale" until I look again. I guess I have a one track mind.

There's a big gate in town with a sign that reads 'Fire main behind gate'. I have passed that way literally hundreds of times and most of those times I accidentally read 'fireman' and I think 'Why's he standing behind the gate?' and then I realise. It's been years and I've only just got over doing that!

I was a bit of a country bumpkin and, at about 16, when I saw Lots for Sale on a sign, I wondered why they didn't just list what they had to offer.

That makes perfect sense to me! You would expect they had all kinds of things on offer!

That does sound fun everyone getting involved in a crossword. I don’t think I could picture a single image for an aimless sofa you definitely have a better imagination than I do. I wouldn’t have even thought of the real answer to armless sofa either .
