My gift to myself yesterday. Or: How I spent some of my February MyLot earnings.

I get an employee discount at Guitar Center. Yesterday, after I taught my lessons, I investigated some guitar picks and found some I really like. Both are by Dunlop, and both have "bumps," for lack of a better word, on the flat surfaces, so they won't slide around in my right hand (between my thumb and index finger) when I play. I experimented with them on my Martin D-18 acoustic guitar, and found that I could play faster and cleaner with these than with my "default" picks, which I simply call my "Dunlop 1.14s" These picks are also made of better material than the 1.14s, so they bring out the overtones of my guitar(s) better. 1.14 refers to the thickness of the picks, Thicker picks yield a fuller, bassier tone. The picks I experimented with yesterday are only 1.00 (rather than 1.14) mm thick, but the material is nice and hard, so they don't flex too much, and they don't sound too bright. I bought both packages. The total cost to me was about $7.00 with my employee discount (I saved about 25 percent). The one on the left is my older 1.14. The one in the middle is the "pointier" of the two kinds of picks I bought. The one on the right is the more "rounded." The background wood is a Snell K/III loudspeaker I restored years ago. It is what I listen to in my "bedroom system." Do you ever think, "I just bought something I might not have bought," or "This is how I spent my MyLot earnings"?

I didn't know there was a difference in picks. So all picks are not the same. Good to know. I'm glad you found some great picks that make you sound better when you play. There have been things I bought that I could have left on the shelf, but got them anyway and enjoyed the little treat.

It's good to treat ourselves now and again. Yes, picks make a big difference, both in playability and sound.

@just4him It adds another interesting "variable" to the equation.

The money that I do earn of MyLot usually goes to the bank so I can purchase items that I need like batteries.

I just leave my money in PayPal. Unless I accumulate enough to transfer a bit to my bank.

@Deepizzaguy It's fun having more in ones bank account than one did before.

@TheHorse That is what I do. Leave it in Pay Pal before making a deposit in my bank account quickly.

I didn't know guitar picks were so pricey. You could just use the plastic bread closer thingies...

Nope. You did well. Very well. I feel I should establish a better control on my expenses. Sometimes, I do feel I am careless. Today was one such day. Dad asked me to get a bulb. The branded one was about 350 bucks. I called and called at least 4 times. He did not lift his cell. I was not feeling too good. So I just bought it and...well, my father said said, I will throw it out. I can be so stupid, isn't it?

Sometimes when I impulse by. But I try not to, because I know how pricy it can be. Saved a lot at the store today, though.

@kaylachan Yep. They (the picks) make me want to play more. My guitar is out and on my bed right now.

Glad you saved some money Yesterday's picks were kind of an "impulse purchase." But they turned out to be a good one.

It doesn't work that way fo me. I always get something in PayPal and add it to my account, What I do think when I get something for myself is that I am happy I was able to do something for myself too. Many times my first thoughts have to be for the cats' food,

Heh. I think that too. Kitty rules. I drool. But I keep money in my PayPal to pay for my Microsoft Word, even though said Microsoft Word doesn't work right.

My MyLot Earnings desideratum remains out of reach. I'm barely going to hit $30 Million this month. It's partly my fault for signing a Vow Of Poverty.

Oh, that's a good idea! I often make coasters or little wooden boxes for Christmas presents. And of course, I bring my little trees to any gatherings I go to.

Nice purchases. Most of my MyLot earnings go toward meals out with my hubby.
