The Question of Whether the Tongue is the Strongest Muscle in the Human Body

@Ruby Hawk and I discussed this question and I decided to do some research on the subject. What I found was that this is a myth. Why it was on my list of facts I don't know. It is a food pusher and, even when we are asleep it is continuously pushing saliva down the throat. The tongue actually has eight different muscles. Bottomline is that there is no way to test and measure the strength of those muscles. I will try to be more careful in the items I list in my ongoing fact lists. By the way, the heart is said to be the hardest working muscle, and then come the gluteus maximus(top of hips or butt), soleus(calf), masseter(chewing jaw muscle), and the uterus are the strongest working muscles in the body.

@LindaOHio ......I'm doing catch up too. Am on April 30th now. I'm losing my energy with all the heat. It's cooler today so maybe I can get more done.

The way some people are constantly flapping them, I don't doubt that tongues are strong.

Thank you for the information. I do know that if by mistake I bite hard on my tongue it hurts terribly.

It does have a high proportion of Type 1 muscle fibres though. This is why the tongue can work a lot without getting tired.
