Texas legislators want the Ten Commandments displayed in classrooms

I love how the GOP is obsessed with the constitutional right to have AR-15s but they don't give the same consideration to the separation of church and state. The Texas state Senate has passed legislation that would require schools to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms throughout the state. They also have passed legislation that would set aside time for prayer and reading of the Bible during class. Like WTF. Public schools are NOT a place for religious education. Not every American student is Christian or even a follower of any religion. The First Amendment states that people have the right to freedom of religion. . . or even *from* religion. This country doesn't have a national religion. Even Prostetants vs Catholics vs Jews have different wording for the 10 Commandments. Which one would be the "official" one? The big culture war thing these days is "parents' rights". Fine. What about the rights of parents who are Muslim or Hindu or Wiccan or athiest? They don't want their children being indoctrinated into a Christian religion. But who would be the groomers in that situation? Hmmmm..... It really is amazing how the GOP is trying to rewind this country's progress 50 or 100 or 300 years or so. Thank Darwin I live and work in a blue state because I would quit before being forced to display one religion's commandments in my classroom.

That might be taking it a little too far. Even as a conservative I don't try to push religion on anyone. I'm okay for allowing time for prayer (no matter what god the person is praying to), but I don't see the need to post the 10 Commandments. What is the purpose and what is it going to accomplish? As far as unwinding/rewinding progress, I don't think progress might be the appropriate word. I think tolerance might be a better suited word. They're trying to rewind people's tolerances. Maybe it's just semantics, but I still think our country is making progress in a lot of areas, despite the efforts of a lot of our lawmakers.
