Our Recent Cruise

I mentioned in a previous post that my husband and I recently got back from a cruise. I promised a post about it. So below are the details about our trip. We went on a 10-day cruise on the Norwegian Getaway. This is the second time we have cruised on the Getaway but about our 7th cruise on Norwegian. The cruise ship left from New York City and it was fun sailing past the Statue of Liberty. We had 4 stops. The first was an overnight stop in Bermuda. Bermuda is one of our very favorite places to go on a cruise. We have been there a few times and it was one of the first places we stopped on our very first cruise together in 2006. This was the only stop we made where we had an excursion planned. If you remember, my husband was suffering from sciatica so we decided to just go and relax and not be too active. We had booked this cruise before he got Sciatica and didn't want to cancel it. I did get off the ship in Bermuda on my own in the afternoon and went and sat on a beach near the cruise port for an hour. I also went to a pharmacy and picked up a few things we needed. Then that night we went on a catamaran rum swizzle tour. Unfortunately, it rained while we were on this tour but we still made it fun. The other stops were at Great Stirrup Cay (the cruise line-owned beach in the Bahamas), Nassau in the Bahamas, and Orlando. We enjoyed the days when most people were off the ship and it was quieter. We worked out almost every day, even though my husband was in pain. He is a real trooper. We ate delicious meals and it was so nice not having to cook for 10 days. We went to 2 specialty restaurants on the ship that normally you have to pay for but we got them free as a promotion. The first one was a Brazilian restaurant where they would bring different types of meats to your table periodically. This included beef, chicken, and lamb. There was also a bunch of side vegetables that were brought to the table and a brown sugar and cinnamon baked pineapple which was amazing. The second specialty restaurant was a seafood restaurant which was delicious. I had salmon and my husband had tuna. We even tried acupuncture, which didn't work for either one of us, but was very relaxing anyway. I also had a chair massage right next to the pool where they only do your back, neck, and shoulders. Those are my favorite types of massages and I loved it. It was supposed to only be 15 minutes but she gave me a 30-minute massage. These types of massages are cheaper than the full body massage so it works for me! We ended up renting a scooter for my husband so he could get around the ship without as much pain and that made the cruise much more enjoyable for him. We usually cruise on Princess Cruises, but our second favorite cruise line is Norwegian and we are already looking at upcoming cruises on both cruise lines to see if we can find a good deal. Do you like to cruise and if so, which is your favorite cruise line?

That sounds like you had a really nice time together. I have never been on a big cruise like that, only afternoon cruises on the Great Lakes.

@Kouponkaren There is so much to see on the Great Lakes. Living in Ontario, I can appreciate all that I see as I can read the local history about different places. We were going to take a 4 day cruise this summer, but we did not get it booked early enough and it sold out. I am afraid of booking something for too long in case I get seasick. I have to wear those bands on my wrists with a little button that applies pressure to the inside of the wrist which is thought to keep the nausea away.

@Juliaacv I think going on a cruise like a type we go on appeals to a certain group of people. I know some people who have been on ocean cruises and get bored too easily. But we don't. We read a lot and don't always have tome to do that at home. I have never even seen any of the great lakes but I would love to one of these days.

@RebeccasFarm I think he didn't want me to be disappointed if we canceled the cruise. He also said if he had to feel bad at home, or on a cruise ship, he would rather feel bad on a cruise ship!

@Kouponkaren Yes that makes perfect sense..if he is going to be in pain, might as well not sit at home and be on a lovely cruise with you

@jstory07 I am very thrifty so spending the money is hard, but we always look for bargains so that helps. I love cruising so much and it's quite an inexpensive way to see the world.

I'm glad you had a wonderful cruise. I haven't yet, but one day I would like to do an Alaskan cruise.

Oh girl, that sounds divine! The only cruise I have been on was about 18 years ago with about 20 family members. It was wonderful. I think we had three stops in Mexico, including Cozumel. My health and pocket book has kept me from going on any others, but when my mom was alive my parents enjoyed them. They went to the Bahamas a couple of times, Alaska twice, Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. They always wanted to go on a cruise to Hawaii, but her dementia diagnosis at aged 46 stopped that. However, maybe someday perhaps my dad and his new wife can explore Hawaii together on a cruise. I think my mother would love that.

I have cruised a couple of times, and one of them is a now defunct cruise line. The second time was on Royal Carribbean. I enjoyed, although it was just a Bermuda cruise and onlke you didn't like it. It was humid they whole time and expensive as well.

Oh, that sounds like you had such a great time! We've only cruised one, but not for lack of trying, lol. We just received a future cruise credit, so we're hoping to go once I get through with treatments in August.

Good to know they have scooters onboard to help with mobility. Sometimes I also go for just the short back massages, instead of whole body.
