Did not get invited to birthday dinner initially

My uncle turned 60 on April 11. I texted his wife a few days ago asking if they’re doing anything for his birthday. She told me they’re having a small dinner this Sunday and asked if I want to join. I said of course I do. I want to celebrate my uncle’s birthday.
But I wonder this. Why was I not invited in the first place? And I wonder why my mom did not tell me about it either and asked if I want to go.
If my uncle’s wife had not asked me if I want to join I would not have invited myself. Would you?
Were you ever invited somewhere only after you asked about it? Or about them doing anything?

I used to be invited to my Cousin's Easter dinner here in the Bay Area. I was for about two years after my Uncle passed away. I realize that family politics sometimes trump (no insult intended--it's a Bridge term) personal relationships. I don't care that much.

Politics should be avoided at family gatherings. Always gets very loud and ugly.

@lovebuglena Unless we can all laugh about it. As you know, I like to bait extremists on both sides.

@lovebuglena I did not mean politics as in Lefties v. Righties. I meant FAMILY politics.

Could they have been so preoccupied they possibly thought they already asked you, and realized they hadn’t when you asked about it? I mean I’d have the same questions you’re having. I also have the tendency to try to think of reasons why it might have happened that way to keep myself from getting somewhat offended. Because like you, I would never have invited myself either had they not ended up asking after all.

@lovebuglena It would be so much easier (and scarier) if we could read minds.

I have no idea. I hope my uncle’s wife told him hubby and I are coming.

Hubby told me yesterday that we should’ve gone to his friend’s house yesterday instead going out to eat. He said it was his wife’s birthday. We weren’t invited though. But hubby said we should’ve invited ourselves, that people will invite you if it’s an outing at a restaurant and not to the house. I disagree with that.

Only all the time. I wasn't exactly popular growing up.

I wasn’t popular either. Never had many friends.

I've never had that happen to me. I'm glad you were finally invited.

Hmm, is this the first time you had not been invited?
I wonder if they just forgot?
No I would not have invited myself, even for family.

Well, as far as I know my uncle did not even want to do anything. They’re only doing something because my other uncle wanted to celebrate. And my uncle’s wife is the one that reserved a restaurant. Maybe she did not think I would enjoy myself because the only people there will be her and my uncle, my mom, and my other uncle and his wife.

As for me I wouldn't go either since in the first place I wasn't told and I had to find out myself that how I operate to avoid friction with anybody

If I didn’t want to celebrate his birthday I wouldn’t have even asked about it.
