I was raised by my parents as an American-Latvian child. At home we spoke only Latvian. On Saturdays I went to Latvian school in the basement of a Lutheran church that the Latvian congregation rented. My parents were glad to keep our heritage alive and they also knew I would learn all I needed to know about America at my grade school. Well, I was five and only in kindergarten when I knew about one of the most popular landmarks in NYC, where we lived. One night dressed in my PJs I grabbed the Johnson’s baby powder and jumped onto my parents’ large bed. My mom and dad were laughing so hard mom was lucky to get this photo. I lifted up my arm with the baby powder and announced with a patriotic feeling “I am the Statue of Liberty!” Once this photo was developed my parents realized just what an unusual photo this was. Behind me on the wall is a painting by a popular Latvian artist named Fridrihs Milts. My dad was an art lover and now and then bought paintings by the Latvian artists who were his friends. If you are interested to see his paintings and know more about him you can Google his name.

That's a great photo. The background is questionable; but it's kind of funny too! I'm glad your parents were interested in keeping your Latvian background alive. Have a wonderful weekend.

@AmberPam that was before my hair got longer and mom would braid it every day. I managed but there were times the Latvian and American got kind of mixed together

This is a lovely special photo indeed Sandra.
Good your parents kept your Latvian culture alive.
I too had the same at home with my parents in culture.
When anyone walked into my childhood home, it was like walking into another world.
