Pain Killers

No matter what the pain there is a tendency to rush to a pharmacy and go for off the counter pain killers.
No doubt the pain is relieved but not the cause that triggered the pain. Pain killers have side effects and the casualty more often are the kidneys I do take pain killers but go for homoeopathy that has a holistic approach.
There are no doubt situations where the cause is incurable and pain killers are the only resource.
It is better to first find out what the pain is due to and then treat it accordingly Antibiotics and pain killers are a safe combination although antibiotics also can have side effects.
Do you take off the counter pain killers?

I take prescribed pain medication from my doctor. I was in a terrible car accident when I was eighteen. I went through a lot of physical therapy, and just dealt with the pain for years with no pain medicine. As the years passed I had more minimally invasive, therapeutic procedures, and eventually we tried pain medication. Some didn't work, one gave me ulcers, but finally we found one that is effective. I go once a month to the pain management clinic to the doctor who prescribes it. He talks to me about it, does a urine test (to make sure I'm not taking too much, or taking other pain medications he didn't prescribe). They are extremely careful these days in what they prescribe.
I have tried so many things. A holistic pain management clinic actually rejected my request for an appointment because they said nothing they offered would help me. I don't like being on medication that can cause damage to my liver as I age, but my pain is excruciating without help.

Can that which causes you pain be redressed? I had a near fatal accident in 2006 - 7 broken ribs and 2 vertebrae injured. Had to take bed rest and initially I was given pain killers but I gave them up on my own. Physiotherapy helped me a lot
I use a gel when there is pain but do not take pain killers. Homoepathy works for me that has no side effects.

@AmbiePam I take back my words when it comes to dealing with situations such as yours. Saying I feel sorry for you is an under statement but hats off that you can smile despite all what you are going through . Your posts are a pleasure to read and I simply look forward to read what you write.
Have you tried homoeopathy I depend on it for everything - digestion, throat issues, and many other things that bother me and it works.

@allknowing You are very sweet, but there is no need to feel sorry for me (I appreciate the sentiment though). I HAVE found homeopathy works well for the nausea I get when I get a migraine (I’ve had them since I was eight). Dealing with it that way is far more effective than anything else I have ever tried.

@Beestring I found this on the Net
"Try a Cold Pack.
Use a Heating Pad or Hot Compress.
Ease Pressure on Your Scalp or Head.
Dim the Lights.
Try Not to Chew.
Hydrate.
Get Some Caffeine.
Practice Relaxation"

@allknowing If the pain is not so severe, I just massage the head. It works sometimes.

You're correct. Pain is a symptom, so the cause should be determined first before treating the pain, because if you keep treating the pain and don't know the cause the illness or condition could progress into a serious one. I know of someone who always took painkillers whenever she had a stomachache, only to discover later on that it was cancer. If she consulted the doctor when she had pain attacks the cause could have been determined immediately, leading to an immediate treatment of the cancer. It was too late when she learned she had cancer, it was stage 1V and at that stage, it is already serious.
I tolerate the pain and try to find the cause first. Like my headache whenever I had a headache, I don't take in painkillers. I know the cause is hypertension, so I take an anti-hypertensive med instead and observed the pain. The pain goes away afterward.

@allknowing I hope your doctors are not all like that. Good doctors would find out the cause first.

You are on the right track But doctors are ruthless. They will prescribe pain killers without first finding out what causes it

I doctor, as specialist in arthrosis, gives me the pain killers I need and the therapy I need. He gives me more when I need it and tells me to take less when it isn´t.

I avoid to take pain killers, if I get a terrible migraine I finally go for one Ibuprofen, but this does not happen often.
Antibiotics are necessary if you have a serious infection. I had to take antibiotics when my dentist caused an infection pulling out my wisdom tooth. I had to go to the ER that night and they gave me antibiotics immediately.

When an infection is detected that is normally taken care of by antibiotics and pain killers together

No I don't take painkillers unless the pain is so severe and can't go away on its own NOTE: I hate medicine I prefer injections
