So, I was listening to some old rock music and was wondering what song the first Rock N Roll song was. Now I know just like many first things it might be hard to know exactly what was the first.
Of course, I looked it up and read some different things and sure enough it’s one of those things where it depends on who you want to believe. I guess everyone is going to have their opinions on the subject.
What I did find is quite a few “experts” on the subject claim the first song to be either Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right, Mama” which came out in 1954 or Bill Haley and His Comets “Rock Around The Clock” which also came out in 1954. Both did become famous faster than others that came out.
Now the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, if you buy into anything they claim anymore, claimed “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston was the first Rock N Roll song. “Rocket 88” was recorded in 1951.
We could look at songs like Fats Domino’s “The Fat Man” from 1950. Freddie Slack’s “House of Blue Lights” from 1946. Maybe Arthur Smith’s “Guitar Boogie” which is credited as the first national hit with electric guitar, from 1948.
I guess any or all of these could lay claim and we will never know for sure due to the fast that so many worked on making a new sound that we can never be sure who or what was the original.
For me, all I can say is I remember hearing this song as a young kid which pulled me into liking music. My parents we country and western fans and I never enjoyed their music. My dad did have a little side of him that listened to other music now and then and the day he had some other station on, and this song came on the radio, I was like who is this, this I like.
Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” recorded in 1955. I certainly am not claiming it to be the first Rock N Roll song, but it certainly was the earliest song I know that gave me the love of Rock N Roll music. Oddly years later I would learn that this song was adapted in part from a country song called “Ida Red”.
