So, last Thursday I went to my art class in Wall again. This time the taxis weren't so good! The first one came a bit later, at about 1:35pm. It was a wheelchair taxi and it was hard to get in. The driver was very nice and he helped me in. When he got there he dropped me off across the road and round the corner so I had to walk back across the road to get to the hall.
We had a drink first, and I'd brought my own green T-bags with me again. A lady came in with a little Scottie or Highland terrier, I don't know which it is. One of those little white ones! He was so cute and very friendly. I asked if he was our life model for today! At one point during our lesson he came over and I got to stroke him. I said, you're going to be putting me off, you are!
We were doing one point perspective this time. We got our sketch books out and first we drew the horizon line. Then we drew the side of a house only. Then we decided where on the horizon line we wanted the vanishing point to be. Then we drew a line from the top of the roof to the vanishing point, then from the point where the house meets the roof to the vanishing point, and finally from the bottom of the house to the vanishing point. Then we filled in the front of the house within those lines. Then we continued down the line with a row of terraced houses, making sure each one was smaller than the last as they receded into the distance within the lines. Then we did the same thing with windows and doors. We did the same on the other side of the street with trees, and people. Then we put in gardens and garden paths, then added fences and a public path all around. I even added a car on the road which the tutor said was cute! This was done with the house being half above the horizon line and half below. We also did an example of a house below the horizon line, which would be as if we were on a hill looking down at the houses, then another with the house above the horizon line, which would be as if we were in the valley looking at the houses that were on the hill.
Next we did one point perspective inside a room. We drew a square and then we put a dot in the middle which would be our vanishing point. We then drew lines from each corner to the dot in the middle. Then we drew in another square within that to represent the far wall. We drew a door/patio door within the back wall. We then drew what could be a window or picture on the wall. We first drew a line straight down. Then we drew a line from the top of that to the vanishing point, and the same at the bottom. Then we drew another line straight down for the other side of the window/picture frame where we thought it should be within the diagonals. We repeated this process for the inside of the window frame/picture frame. Then we repeated this process with a rug, a sideboard, a sofa (which on my picture looks like a piano!) and a shelf!
After we had a break and another cup of tea we started on enlarging using grids. We had a picture of a horse and we drew a grid over it with each square being 5cm × 5cm. Then we got out a piece of our cartridge paper and drew another grid on this, but this time 7cm × 7cm. The we copied the horse onto our cartridge paper square by square concentrating on one square at a time and folding our reference picture so that only the square we were working on at any one time was visible. When we were finished we went over the shading with a 4B pencil to make it darker. (See picture above).
Paul reckoned I was holding out on them as I was slow drawing my grids and he reckoned I was secretly good at it! We had a good laugh all afternoon.
When we were finished we looked at the other peoples pictures. The more advanced students had been doing two point perspective which looks much harder! They had pictures of houses which were on a corner.
I needed the toilet and as I was about to head that way I saw the little doggy looking at me. I went up to it and said, are you looking at me? Are you? And I gave him another little stroke. When I came out of the toilet he was looking at the pictures with everyone else. The lady asked me what I thought of the pictures and I said they were very good. I said the dog seems to like them. The lady said, yes, as long as he doesn't get his paws on them. She said he did that once, and it wss was acrylics! There were little paw prints made of paint everywhere!
Fortunately today's pictures were just pencil drawings!
So, at 5:00pm I went out to see where my taxi was. It wasn't there. I waited for a bit. No taxi. Paul came out and asked hasn't your taxi come yet? And I said, no. Paul said that if he'd known he could have given me a lift, and asked where I lived. When I told him he said he lived the other side of Lichfield, but he wouldn't have minded giving me a lift, but he said you don't want to disappoint the taxi people though do you, when you've booked one.
At 5:10pm I phoned the taxi place to enquire where my taxi was. I think they must have forgotten me because he phoned back to tell me he'd booked me a new one. That one didn't come till about 5:30pm! As I was still waiting the tutor came out of the hall and said, has your taxi still not come? and I said no, and I told her what had happened. Then she said, this is a taxi coming now, is this it? It was. The taxi driver gave a thumbs up as he drew near. It was a different taxi from this morning, and it was more like a mini bus. It was even harder to get in and out of! The tutor helped me in. When I got home the taxi driver lifted me out! That was very nice of him.
I went in and told my Mum all about my day, and about why I was a bit late getting back!

Thank you very much. They say anyone can draw. You just have to practise.

Thank you very much, that's very kind of you.
I'm glad you like the horse. It might look good but it was very hard and there was lots of rubbing out involved!
I'm hoping that I will get better with my art class. Thank you very much.
