Credit Card Charges

We've been having trouble with one of our credit cards recently. I check our statement carefully every month and question every charge. I saw a charge on our statement and in the pending box for online sites. They were made to my husband's card. The name of the company was a dot com company which I looked up online. They are a subscription service (third party) company. They have a customer service number right there on the page and they answered the phone immediately. The representative refunded me the charge on my statement and the one in 'pending'. I phoned my husband to tell him to cancel his card. Right before my eyes while I was talking to him another charge for the same company popped up in the 'pending' box. Wow! Just wow! Unfortunately my husband had to cancel his credit card for the second time this year. The charge that came through today was not showing up at the website's accounting department (I called them back) as yet but they denied the transaction. This is so frustrating for my husband because now he has to wait for a new card to be sent to him. He rarely uses his credit card so the fact that someone was able to get to it boggles my mind. AND he doesn't do much of anything online. The only charge on his card that was made online was the airlines for our trip this summer to see his family. I don't know how these people do it. Like I said, it was a subscription site but judging by the name it seemed to me that it might be for online gaming or maybe a dating site. I don't know. It's a third party and they were unable to tell me what the original company being subscribed to was. Check your statements carefully, folks. In this day and age where prices are skyrocketing and money is limited, people are finding illegal ways to get money. I am still stunned that while I had my bank account open another charge went through right before my eyes. I guess I got lucky there.

It happened to me on my card a couple of years ago. It was easy to spot because it was for a bunch of dating websites. Me? Dating? Not likely.

That's crazy. A couple of years ago, my brother-in-law was checking his bank statement online, and he saw at that moment someone was three hours away in Oklahoma City using his debit card to make a $120 purchase from Walgreens. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

I received an automated phone call from my credit card company telling me there was a suspicious charge. Everyone told me it was a scam but the recording told me to call the bank (didn't have me press 1 to speak to an agent). I called the bank and someone had made a purchase in a hardware store in Jamaica.

@patgalca Good lord, it's ridiculous. I canceled my credit card last year because even though I canceled my Wal-Mart membership they kept charging me. Sick of it, I took their option away, and now they have no card to charge.

@AmbiePam I keep seeing a commercial on tv for a credit card that you can literally TURN OFF on your phone so it can't be used until you personally activate it. Why can't all cc companies come up with that?

Fortunately the charge was TO a website, like a subscriber website. I was able to call them, get someone on the phone immediately and the charges reversed. The last time this happened the company never responded to me and it took forever to get the bank to credit it back.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I needed to cancel my card twice this year because of those scammers getting a hold of my debit card number. I get an e-mail every day from my bank with current charges so I do pay attention to every transaction. When one doesn't look familiar, I go to the bank site itself and find out what it was for.

So sorry this happened to you. It has happened to me as well twice this year. Waiting for that second card is hard when you need to make important purchases. I hope he gets it quickly.

He doesn't use the credit card very often. I'm the one who shops online and we have different card numbers so I don't know how people are gaining access to his card.

This is one of the reason I do not have a credit card.

I think it's more about shopping online than having a credit card. I have an online debit card I should be using. I think it is safer.

I just checked my statement and the only charges I don't like are the purchase interest charge and the cash interest charge. I guess that last one is because I paid for my new roof on my card and haven't been able to clear it yet.

I didn't like getting monthly fee charges on my credit card so my bank suggested I get a credit card with them (different bank) and all I have to do is use it once in 3 months and my fees would be credited back. They tried to give me a card with the lowest interest. I said, I don't need the lowest interest rate. I pay my card in full every month. I have NOT used that new card online and I'm definitely not going to now. I will probably start using my online debit card. Honestly, even though my husband's card is now cancelled I feel like I need to check my account just to make sure more charges haven't been made.

When it happened to my card I looked to see who was new that I used my card with. I had ordered vitamins from a store in another part of the province. I decided I wouldn't use them again feeling they were the ones that caused the problem.

Criminals are getting away with so much. Thank goodness you keep an eye on your statement.

That would be very concerning. I don't how these sharks operate either but it's scary.

Especially for someone like my husband who uses his credit card very very minimally.
