This week the taxi was just on time to take me to my art class, and it was the minibus taxi again. It was figure drawing this week, and I wasn't much good at doing people. When I got there the little dog was already there and he was waiting by the door to greet people as they came in! I had a little stroke of him and then I got a drink of tea (took my own T-bags) then we began. We drew a circle for a head then measured it vertically. Then we drew a short line down for that distance 7 more times. Then we numbered the segments 1-8 with the head being no.1. The neck and shoulders then come down to segment 2, the legs start at segment 4. The knees are at about 5 1/2 and the feet are at the bottom of segment 8. The top of the arms are 1 1/2 heads and the bottom of the arms are 2 heads. After we drew the outline of our person we drew another with his arms and legs in different positions, then we drew a small one as if he was in the distance! Then we tried a portrait of a face. We drew an egg shape for a head then drew a line approx in the middle going across where the eyes should be. We drew one eye then we measured the eye on our reference picture. We measured on our reference photo the distance between the eyes and then we measured it against the eye and we'd mark where the second eye started after comparing it to the size of the eye we'd already drawn. We measured from the eyes to the side of the face in the same way. Then we drew in the second eye between the marks we made. Then we measured the nose in the same way, both length ways and width ways, compare it to another part of the picture, then measure that on the drawing we'd done and that's how big it should be. The same with the distance between nose and mouth, between mouth and chin, between nose and hairline etc, and we'd adjust the initial egg shaped accordingly. When the shapes were in place we did a bit of shading. It came out pretty well (see above). By now it was about 4:10pm. I'd been to the loo and had another cup of tea in this time too. The tutor said we've got some time left, would you like to attempt another one? She gave me a pile of pictures of faces and I looked through them. I chose the Mona Lisa! So I did exactly as before, measuring everything. I think it came out pretty well but It's not finished yet. One of the tutors printed off a picture of the Mona Lisa so I can finish it at home. At about 4:50pm one of the ladies called out "Has anyone booked a taxi for Lichfield," and I said, " Yes, me." She said it's alright, just letting you know he's here! He was ten minutes early! He had to wait 15 minutes before I came out though because I didn't get out till 5 past! When the taxi man dropped me off home he asked me if I wanted to book him up again for next week ready and I said, Oh, yes please, that would be very good. So he's booked me in now already for next Thursday, I don't even have to book it up! I got in and told my Mum all about it and about the taxi being 10 minutes early and showed her what I'd been doing. She was very impressed. I showed my step-dad aswell and he was impressed too!

That's the basic of sketching a portrait of a man. I have read about in the Internet for I'm interested to draw.

I think you've done really well. I knew about the eyes being halfway down the face. This surprised me when I first heard of it but now I often look at people on TV and see if their eyes are where they are supposed to be.
