Wow, it’s Crusade for Children weekend! That used to mean not going anywhere because every fire department had roadblocks at every red light to collect money. Now? Give online. I’ll write about that later. For the time being, you need to sing along with another song that’s now celebrating its 40th birthday. Cool Places - Sparks and Jane Wiedlin I don’t know if you saw this, but Jane Wiedlin celebrated her 65th birthday a couple of weeks ago by posting a “nude” (she was nude but you couldn’t see anything) photo of herself. Glad she’s got the body for that. (I’d be paid money to take down a similar photo. ) In addition to her work with the Go-Go’s she went over to the fun band Sparks and helped them out with this song. It turned out to be the biggest US hit in Sparks’ career. By the time this came out Sparks had already been around for ten years. And yes, they’re still at it. They just released an album and are on a tour. Ron (keyboards, the “stoic” one [who Paul McCartney impersonated in the “Coming Up” video]) and Russell (the vocalist) Mael have been making great music for half a century, and I hope they keep it up for many more years. Cool Places Written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael Recorded by Sparks and Jane Wiedlin From In Outer Space, 1983 Hey girl, need a light:

I remember this song and video well . . . back in the days we loved dancing to it (sooooooo 80s!). Everyone knew Go-Go's but less of Sparks, they were kind of the funky new wave synth (?) . . . I loved this "union".

@much2say — that’s a good start. They had a song on their 2008 album that’s called “Lighten Up, Morrissey.” No word on how Morrissey enjoyed it.

They still have the firemen with boots at our stoplights where I live. It feels so awkward.

@FourWalls I try not to look at them when I’m trapped at the light.

@AmbiePam — yes, that’s always a good time to look for that penny you dropped between the seats back in 2019….

I spent most of the 80s in the Army, including 2 years in Korea. Blessedly, during those years, I never heard of either this or the last band or their music.

Oh well. Guess I’m the only Sparks fan here. Well, that’s why they exist and other bands exist…different tastes!

We’ll try again tomorrow. Like I told Lou, I was in a different music world in the 80s.

@FourWalls and I was in a state of shock having finished university, having finished major partying, and thrown into my first serious job

A lot of these are so stereotypically 80s. This one, today’s song, and many yet to come.
