Going Through the Clutter

United States

I have so much clutter to go through in my house. We had new carpets put down on our basement level which has a family room, 2 bedrooms an office and a small kitchenette area. We took all of the books out of the bookcases and took down all of the knick-knacks, etc. We ran out of room to put the boxes and I even had to store a box in the downstairs shower. Now I have to get busy and go through all of the books and clutter and decide what to keep and what to donate or throw away. I have discovered I am like a squirrel though and have "squirreled stuff away for years. It is fun but time-consuming to go through it all. How much clutter do you have in your home?

I have a lot of clutter. Trying to get rid of one thing for June first, up to 30 things on June 30th!

@paigea That's a great idea. See my above comment about holding everything in your hand and see if it brings you joy. If not, we are supposed to give it away or throw it away. Hope that helps!

@Kouponkaren I just hate that theory. If you take it literally, you will throw out things you actually need. The toilet bowl cleaner brings me no joy at all! But if I toss it, I have to go buy some more! haha

@wolfgirl569 Good for you for getting rid of things. I am trying, but it's a lifelong ambition.

@wolfgirl569 Me too, but I never liked it to begin with anyway. It has caused a lot of stress in my 1st and current marriage. For some reason, both f my husbands have been clean freaks. Ugh. And they don't like clutter.

I have stuff that I do not use any more but I cannot call it clutter. I wish I knew how to sell those things that look brand new

@allknowing Look up how to sell things one Bay. It's very easy. Or maybe you can sell larger things on the Facebook Marketplace in your area?

@kouponkaren Even though there are only 3 of us we have managed to fill 5 bedrooms, 3 lounges and 5 bathrooms and at the end of the year we’ll be moving to a much smaller house. So much will have to go.

@xFiacre See above where I read about holding everything in your hand to see if it brings you joy and if not, get rid of it. Can you have a yard sale or garage sale? Or donate items you no longer want? Good luck. I would love to come over to Ireland and help you! I am in love with the country of Ireland!

I totally understand you. I'm a pack rat myself. I still have clutter from 18 years ago. :( I've been decluttering since the covid lockdowns. But it seems I don't get much thrown away -- that, or I just have too much clutter in my life. We are moving to the city proper in July and I'm hoping to start discarding again at least before we lock this house.

@almostoveryou Sounds like we will need it. The guys are coming to work on the house tomorrow and I still have too much clutter left downstairs.

@almostoveryou I hear you on that. Moving is a good way to get rid of excess items that you no longer need or use. We moved 9 years ago and got rid of a lot. Now it's time to do it all again because I have accumulated a lot since the move.

We have a lot of stuff for sure, whether or not it is considered clutter depends on who you ask of course!

@Fleura Ha ha, I hear you on that one. One person's treasure is another person's junk! My husband thinks most of my treasures are junk!

@cabuyogty I have been working on the clutter downstairs for a week and it isn't much better than it was. Although I am taking a load to the thrift store tomorrow so that will be nice to get rid of some books and a few household items.
