I was quite offended!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a washing machine on Ebay. It was just what I wanted for the place I have been renovating. I cleared the junk out of my car and drove over to collect it. When I arrived at the address as arranged, the seller, a man, looked a bit surprised and said ‘Who sent you to pick it up?' I said ‘I did’. He muttered something about expecting something different and went off to fetch it, with me following to help him carry it to my car. But when I got to the door he refused to let me help, even though I explained that it would be me getting it out at the end of the trip. Instead he called his wife to assist, a woman who looked perhaps a little younger than me but appeared and smelled like a heavy smoker. The two of them got it to the car and we all manipulated it inside. Then he comforted himself by saying ‘I’m sure there’ll be someone there to help you’. I don’t know why he thought he knew more about my domestic arrangements than I did. Maybe he thought I was feeble-minded as well as being a frail little old lady. Well I drove it back and unloaded it and got it into the house without assistance. It’s surprising what you can do with the aid of a plank of wood when you need to All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Sometimes us old ladies are greatly underestimated. I've still got it when I need it.

It blows my mind that there are people out there who STILL have that mindset. I mean, what the heck?!

I have often heard the phrase "how did you lift it?", with my arms of course and the help of a lever or a plank of wood. May be we are not as strong as men, but we can be creative.

It always makes me think of the woman who built the Minack theatre in Cornwall. Apparently she salvaged a lot of timber from a shipwreck, but when she admitted to officials that it was she who had illicitly taken the wood and carried it up the cliff, they simply didn't believe her and so she was not charged with any offence!

@Fleura This is an interesting story that I did not know. My grandparents built their own home and my grandmother was the one who brought the heavy stuff, she was stronger than my grandfather.

Sounds like a real old fashioned guy. I hope the washer works well for you.

Very strange - not only the assumption that I would be too feeble, but also the idea that someone must have sent me, I couldn't just have bought the thing myself and come of my own accord!

I know, levers are good things. I had the opposite reaction when I was giving away the fridge that came with this house (too big for my needs). I clearly stated that the person who got it had to bring someone to help move it. The first guy was mad that it wasn't sitting at the curb waiting for him. Fine, go away.

@fleura He May be able to manhandle a washing machine into place, but I wonder does he know how to use one? You obviously can do both. I wonder did he feel that his masculinity was being attacked by you planning to move the machine without the aid of a man?
