You just can’t plan something like this. Yesterday’s song, as well as today’s, seem to fit the wildfire smoke in some way. As for today’s, the last “big hit” on the countdown (duh, there’s only two songs left!
), it’s hard to believe this is 40 years old now. Time to go back to 1983 for another great song!
#2: Modern Love - David Bowie
With an air quality alert because of the smoke, the opening, spoken line — “I know when to go out, I know when to stay in” — is oh, so truthful.
Way back at the beginning of the month I said that 1983 was the year of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s debut album. That wasn’t his only contribution to music 40 years ago: he played guitar on Bowie’s Let’s Dance album.
Man, this is a great song. It’s on my 100 favorites list. It has been ever since a friend asked me to make that list 25 years ago. I update it every 5-7 years, but this song is one of those that never falls off.

@FourWalls It gave me a chuckle, but I’ll tell her (and I really will).

I have two Bowie songs on the list, one from the 70s and this one.

Absolutely! He repeatedly reinvented his styles. Sometimes it took people a while to catch up to it, but they did.

I like the way he re-invented his sound so many different times while still being easily identified as himself.1 person likes this

@FourWalls David Bowie has an unmistakable voice. There's no way, anyone else could sound this way.

This is one that makes a non-fan go, “what the heck was he doing in the 70s when he could’ve been doing THIS???”

I'd hate for it to be very 40s in the 80s.
