Molasses Flood

United States

If someone were to ask us what we fear that could kill us, I don't think a flood of molasses would be in anyone's answer, but that's what happened in 1919. In Boston, people were going about their business when a large storage tank disentagred leaving a giant wall of molasses spreading throughout the town. Sadly, 21 people died. People were stuck in it and could not free themselves. Wikkipedia states there was a class action suit against the company and they won 7,000 dollars per person. This is what happens when people in charge let soddy workmanship be the norm. I'm adding a link to a short video but there are longer ones that explain it in detail. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Molasses_Flood Picture is from pixabay.

I remember this story coming up years ago on an episode of "Mythbusters", which used to air on the Discovery Channel. I ended up looking online for more information because it sounded so unreal.

I had no idea this was on Mythbusters. I will have to look that up because I don't know how they could have recreated this large amount of syrup. Maybe, they used a miniture town.

@misunderstood_zombie No, the story came up on Mythbusters, they didn't recreate it. They were testing how a human could swim in syrup. They then brought up if swimming in syrup had any real life relevance, which led to the story you mentioned. The story itself wasn't a myth they were disputing.

@AmbiePam Oh, I thought that's all they did was bust myths true or false. lol My husband loved this show and I watched it occasionally. I liked those two guys, one was always cheerful and the other grumpy.

What a big mess that would be to clean up.

It would not be fun to clean. I can't even imagine what they used at the time to clean it.

I didn´t know that I guess that that is a worse way of dying than in a normal flood.

@misunderstood_zombie - I have been at one step from dying more than once. It was not my time to go, I am still here.

It's crazy how unsafe we are at any minute, and it's a wonder any of us get out of bed. I always put my trust in Christ and that helps me through the day.

Dying being struck by a wall of molasses overtaking them is a terrible way to die.
